#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - A Whirl Through 1922!
Hello darlings! Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com, your one-stop shop for all things twirly and fabulous! It’s Tuesday, which means it’s time to dive into another #TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History! Today, we're taking a trip on the Orient Express (I simply must take the train!) to Paris, the fashion capital of the world, and step back to the shimmering, glamorous 1920s. Buckle your belts, because we're heading to May 23rd, 1922, ladies!
Now, imagine a world of flapper dresses, bobbed hair, and Jazz music… Ah, the excitement! Fashion in the 1920s was truly a revolution and this glorious era brought about changes in ballet too. Can you imagine?! The tutus we know and adore today had a whole different look and feel in the 1920s!
A Glimpse into Tutu Timelines
You see, the classic romantic tutu, the airy, floating skirt we often associate with ballerinas, was still quite new at this time. This iconic style evolved over several decades, gradually morphing into the iconic image we know today. What did they wear before that? Well, tutus were often more fitted than our dreamy, voluminous tutus. Think a sleek, streamlined look, perfect for showcasing those gorgeous leg lines!
Now, let's get into the 1920s ballet scene. This era was a whirlwind of change. Russian ballet, led by the incredible Diaghilev Ballets Russes, took the world by storm! They were groundbreaking with their productions and the beautiful costumes they commissioned from the most renowned artists. I have to admit that Diaghilev Ballets Russes is the epitome of glamorous ballet. It’s a visual and artistic feast for the senses and the reason the ballet world became captivated by colour and a desire to express movement in entirely new and exciting ways! Can you imagine all the exciting possibilities? The tutus were transformed into works of art!
Tutus and Trends
Think dramatic shapes and colours! Tutus in the 1920s took a new direction with sleek, figure-hugging designs. And then, there were the tutus that went for a streamlined elegance. Gone were the layers and layers of ruffles. Instead, ballet skirts embraced straight lines that emphasized the ballerinas’ movements.
My Favourite Thing!
On May 23rd, 1922, imagine being at the Paris Opera! The incredible Diaghilev Ballets Russes were on a tour of Europe, and their shows were electrifying the whole world. Think, ladies, all the incredible dresses! The extravagant gowns with layers and layers of feathers! Oh! The shimmering beaded headbands! The dancing in these elegant outfits must have been exquisite and full of exquisite glamour. A true delight for any ballerinas eyes.
Let's Talk Fashion, darlings!
Of course, a trip back in time wouldn’t be complete without some fabulous fashion discoveries, would it? 1922 was the epitome of glamorous elegance. Ladies went for loose, flowing silhouettes, dropping the corsets and adopting the 'boyish' look. Can you imagine a dancer's elegance paired with the liberating fashion of the time! How fantastic!
Think shimmering dresses made of silk and lace, perfect for showing off their delicate figures!
It is easy to understand why everyone embraced the freedom of movement and fashion of the era! And, just as important, flapper fashion embraced jewellery! A whole ocean of pearls and diamonds, beads and bracelets were worn with both everyday and elegant outfits. I am dreaming of owning some stunning 1920s jewellery! I would adore wearing a head full of pearls and the jewels as bracelets - wouldn't that be just too glamorous!
A Moment of Tutu Inspiration
In the realm of fashion, inspiration has always come from all sorts of fascinating places. In the early 1900s, painters and designers began to draw inspiration from Ancient Egypt and Russia. Just as you could wear your favourite Egyptian and Russian themed fashion in the 1920s. I imagine how chic the dancers would look in those glamorous outfits with their gorgeous and elegant silhouettes!
Oh my, there are just so many fashion pieces to dream of, but that, my lovely darlings, is a story for another time. Until then, remember that no matter what year it is, it's always a good time to twirl and feel fabulous!
Until next time, darling readers, keep those tutus twirling! Stay beautiful, be bold, and spread the love for all things pink! Stay safe! Xx Emma.
