#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 22nd August 1922 (Post 4730)
Hello, darlings! It's your favourite tutu-loving, time-travelling ballerina blogger Emma here, back with another peek into the wonderful history of our beloved ballet tutus! Iām just back from a fabulous trip to 1922 Paris - the city of love, lights, and, of course, breathtaking ballet! As I always say, nothing quite beats a classic French tutu, and let me tell you, in 1922, they were as stunning as ever!
Todayās #TutuTuesday takes us right back to a time when the tutu was becoming truly iconic, and this beautiful garment wasn't just for ballerinas on stage. Just think about that for a moment - tutus, those frothy, romantic masterpieces of tulle, were starting to infiltrate everyday life! Can you imagine the excitement? Imagine, for example, seeing a beautiful lady strutting down the Rue de Rivoli in her very own tutuā¦
The Tutu Makes its Mark on FashionWhile the classical, multi-layered romantic tutus were still popular in the theatre, the more streamlined, less frilly versions of tutus were catching on with everyday fashion in the 1920s. You can still spot them today in art from this era! Can you imagine it? Think shimmering silver, black and emerald tutus that floated down boulevards as beautifully as a swan. They weren't worn everywhere, but a short tutu skirt added just a hint of elegance and a sense of āballerinaā spirit to women's fashion back then, just as a chic ballerina shoe or a simple tulle scarf would do today.
And thatās the beauty of fashion, isn't it? It always finds new ways to reinvent itself, and those little tutu touches, those snippets of ballerina style, kept on popping up throughout the roaring twenties!
Speaking of that timeā¦
Parisian Fashion Delights!Speaking of roaring twenties, Paris in 1922 was a kaleidoscope of style! I popped into the Folies BergĆØre (my favourite spot, of course!) and got swept up in a whirl of gorgeous, flapper-style dresses, short, stylish hair bobs, and elegant accessories that made everyone look as glamorous as a ballet dancer! The city itself seemed to hum with the joy of dancing! Imagine waltzing under twinkling chandeliers in your own dazzling tutu, and suddenly I understood the pull of the Roaring Twenties! It was all about elegance, adventure, and a sense of freedom, and in a way, the ballerina spirit encapsulated all of that beautifully!
Oh, and speaking of glamorous events, 1922 was a great year for the Parisian ballet scene. I had the absolute pleasure of seeing a dazzling performance of The Sleeping Beauty, a beautiful, classic piece by Tchaikovsky. The music was enchanting and the ballet itself, a dazzling affair! I was absolutely transported!
Of course, I simply couldnāt go back in time without stopping for some Parisian fashion delights! The chic boutiques on the Rue Saint-HonorĆ© were bursting with shimmering sequins and stunning fabrics - just the kind of stuff to inspire a ballet dancer's wardrobe, I can assure you! I snagged a darling pink chiffon shawl and a delicate ivory tutu that will be a perfect addition to my new ballet dress. A little bit of Parisian elegance never goes amiss!
