#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 12th December 1922!
Hello darlings! Itās Emma here, back again with another edition of #TutuTuesday for www.pink-tutu.com, your one-stop shop for all things tutu-licious! As always, weāre whisking back through time today, to uncover the glorious evolution of this most elegant of garments - the tutu! Todayās journey takes us all the way back to December 12th, 1922, a magical date for all ballet lovers!
Oh, my dear readers, how I wish I could hop in my fabulous time machine right now, a la Doctor Who, and be transported back to 1922! Imagine the sights, the sounds, the glorious fashion! This was a time of revolution, both on stage and in the streets, and my dear tutus were at the forefront of it all.
Now, I've had to do a bit of sneaky train hopping to afford all this travelling you see. Between being the "it girl" in 1922, twirling with the likes of the esteemed Diaghilev, and earning a penny with my extra, extra ballet performances, well, a girl's got to be clever about where she spends her hard-earned cash. But believe me, every penny is worth it, all for my dear blog readers. After all, spreading the tutu-loving message is my ultimate calling.
And oh, let's get back to 1922! It was truly an exhilarating year in the world of dance! Did you know that on the 12th of December, 1922, the one and only Nijinsky's āLe Sacre du Printempsā, that is, The Rite of Spring, made its triumphant return to London? Itās considered to be a masterpiece, but you know what they say, darling! Anything with such a bold vision, a vision of chaos and primitive, raw energy, a vision embodied by those dynamic, revolutionary tutu-wearing dancers - well, anything bold is bound to make a splash!
And let's face it, a tutu never just goes with the flow! It is, after all, an inherently revolutionary piece of apparel. Especially if itās my special brand of Pink Perfection. You're either all in on the revolution or you're out! I mean, can you even imagine that stage design, so different from the old school ballerina days? I bet the Londoners couldnāt believe their eyes!
You know, these amazing dances and performances truly were, in some ways, avant-garde fashion shows in their own right. It was as if every dance was a powerful manifesto in the language of fabric and motion! It was this bold style and those flowing, flowing skirts that made even those very Victorian and very conservative audiences gasp in awe. That's the true magic of dance!
You see, my dears, just like fashion in 1922, those wonderful flapper-like tutus with all those daring, exciting, and almost scandalous, frilly lengths, the bold colours and excitingly daring cut and designs... well, thatās where my vision lies. It was all about embracing this radical expression - an art that truly empowered women, from the way they moved, right down to what they wore, a little bit of rebellion, a whole lot of extra, extra! That is truly the spirit of the pink tutu if you ask me!
And of course, my dears, there was just so much happening that year, especially for ballet. For me, it was like I could *breathe in the intoxicating energy from every corner of this thriving metropolis! We were on the cusp of something phenomenal - modern dance was being birthed before our very eyes!
So much to talk about, so many stunning fashion styles, and yes, the 12th of December in 1922 marked the day when The Rite of Spring came back with its incredible artistry and unyielding vision - in London - right in front of the Londonersā very eyes. And can we talk about that stage design? A vision! I could just picture myself on that stage in the grand Royal Opera House, feeling those amazing footlights upon my Pink Perfection tutu! A girl can dream!
And letās just talk about Nijinsky's performance, which was absolutely breathtaking, with his extraordinary ability to portray such emotional vulnerability while swirling in this radical attire. Such amazing movement demands an equally spectacular garment. That is what brings a show to life! You see, dear readers, these amazing dances transformed audiences' perceptions about what ballet could be and they created such a magical connection between art and the emotions of our times. *Talk about art with impact! *
And for a final sprinkle of Pink Perfection, my lovely readers, 12th of December is my favourite time of the year! This time every year, the air in London is filled with so much joy. Everyone is enjoying all sorts of delicious, Christmas fare, from delicious spiced gingerbread to hot mulled wine (a bit of hot brandy to help warm the bones, as it were, during the cold English winter!). As it gets closer and closer to Christmas day, everyone gets to relax a bit and have a good time! This is really the *zeitgeist at the time, my loves,* the perfect opportunity to take time to relax and to be thankful! And you just canāt help but feel like dancing a bit, can you? Well, maybe just one extra, extra dance!
