Tutu Tuesday #4752: A Whirlwind through 1923

Hello my darlings! Emma here, back with another instalment of my #TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History blog! I’m currently floating through 1923 in my favourite blush pink tutu and honestly, the world is simply divine. I’ve got my notebook full of sketches and musings on all the delightful trends of this era. I might just whip up a replica of one of these stunning dresses for next week’s performance at the Royal Opera House.

I took the Orient Express to Paris, naturally, for the couture shows. The train journey was utterly fabulous. I wore my new turquoise lace dress (can’t share details just yet, darling! It’s going in next week’s blog!), but it looked sensational against the burgundy plush seats. A quick change in the bathroom to my most glamorous silver-grey number and then onto the champagne reception. Ah, the Parisian atmosphere is a cocktail of charm, artistry, and a hint of naughtiness!

Speaking of charm, darling, there was this wonderful little dress – a flapper frock in the most divine blush-pink! It's the perfect combination of graceful, flowing fabrics, a dash of sassy embellishments, and a hint of scandalous leg! All these fashionable flappers with their bobs and their daring dresses are leaving me a little peckish – I could have another éclair.

The 1920s, you see, were an age of glamour and liberation, a departure from the tightly-laced silhouettes of previous eras. We are witnessing a resurgence in femininity and elegance with an edge – a true ballet of style. And tutus, darling? The classic white, the ethereal pale pink, they were everywhere, especially on stage! I am, of course, taking it upon myself to spread the pink tutu love in my very own inimitable style. Imagine: tutus adorning a flapper, a touch of delicate whimsy amidst the modernity.

It wouldn't be a Tutu Tuesday without a ballet moment, and today we are talking The Rite of Spring. Oh darling, it's simply scandalous, in a good way, you know! That fierce and raw choreography! That raw energy that spills across the stage like liquid fire! This ballet shook the world up, much like those fashionable flappers, and gave a voice to raw passion and artistic expression. That, I think, is a sentiment that speaks to every dancer.

I took a peek at the stage, backstage and in the studios, and let me tell you, this artform is a constant dance between discipline and abandon, an embrace of every ounce of grace and athleticism that our beautiful bodies can manage.

Speaking of grace, I just had to tell you about the most fabulous exhibition I attended in the heart of London – “The Beauty of the Ballet: Dance, Art and Performance, 1750-1930”. My, oh my! Imagine, a century and a half of ballet! From Marie Taglioni to the rise of modern dance, it was an incredible display of artistic development.

Let's not forget, the ballet, like the fashion scene, is all about trends, darling. And this period witnessed a blossoming of balletic styles! Think "classical" and then boom! You see these incredible new creations – ballets of character with exciting new choreography, even for a ballerina of my time travelling experience! This era really pushed the boundaries of dance, allowing artists and dancers to express themselves freely. My! The world of dance and theatre really has me enthralled, it's just wonderful!

To help bring these iconic designs to life in the modern age, I've been collaborating with a few of my favourite tailors. This means soon you, yes you darling, will be able to enjoy the magic of these exquisite garments without venturing to Paris or London. And isn’t it delightful to wear something reminiscent of these fabulous eras? The joy of getting dressed, finding a perfect piece that sings for your soul, you just have to have it.

Don’t forget, my lovelies, I’m always looking for ways to make you feel fabulous! If you ever have any questions, don’t hesitate to get in touch with me via the pink-tutu.com blog. Leave a comment, write a blog post, tell me all about what your perfect pink tutu outfit would be, or your favourite balletic style. Until next week, when we’re travelling on another fantastic Tuesday, I wish you a happy and elegant week! And please remember, wear your tutus with pride, because, dear ones, life's a dance.
