#TutuTuesday: A Twirl Through Time – 13th March 1923

Hello, darlings! It’s Emma here, your resident tutu enthusiast, back with another #TutuTuesday, straight from the archives of ballet history! This week, we’re taking a trip back to 13th March 1923, a time of flapper dresses and Charleston grooves, a time when tutus were starting to take centre stage! This is post number 4759 on my www.pink-tutu.com blog, just in case you're curious about all the tutus we’ve explored so far!

My train journey to Paris, fuelled by the energy of last night’s stunning ballet performance at the Opera Garnier, had been a whirlwind. Today, my lovelies, we’re going to delve into the wonderful world of ballet history, exploring the fascinating developments in the tutu’s evolution during the Roaring Twenties!

I’ve gotta tell you, the whole travel experience is just pure bliss! Whizzing across the countryside on the French railways, it’s the perfect opportunity to catch up on my magazine reading and sketch new tutu designs in my little notebook. The clatter of the train tracks, the scent of coffee from the trolley girl, the views… I can’t imagine a more inspiring way to travel!

Paris: A Playground of Fashion and Ballet

And now, here I am in the heart of Paris, the city that knows a thing or two about chic. As I stepped off the train, the buzz of the city washed over me. There’s an energy, a vibrancy here that makes you want to dance, to laugh, to celebrate life!

Today's date, 13th March, is special. Imagine a Paris brimming with artistic flair. Fashion is booming with sleek dresses, flapper fringes, and headbands. Ballet is still enjoying a renaissance from Diaghilev’s Ballet Russes and new companies are springing up, adding fresh twists to the classical style.

Speaking of Ballet Russes, my dears, they’re a whirlwind of fashion themselves. You simply have to witness a performance. Imagine tutus of dazzling silk and satins, cut shorter to give the dancers an alluring, more athletic look.

Twirling Towards Change

But the evolution of the tutu doesn’t stop at style! We're talking about revolutionary movements in technique, darling! The classical tutu was already in place, long and tiered, perfect for showcasing intricate footwork, but ballet was undergoing a new revolution. It was moving, like a Parisian evening gown, towards freedom. It wanted to embrace modern ideas, be lighter, bolder, express the body in new ways, and in this sense, the tutu evolved as well.

The tutu of this era wasn't just an article of clothing, it was a canvas, darling. It showcased the expressive power of ballet in new ways. There was an emphasis on grace and lightness, allowing the dancers to showcase the fluidity of their movements with effortless beauty! Think delicate silks and light fabrics swirling with every pirouette, capturing the mood and spirit of a more liberating era!

The Tutu: An Ode to Femininity

I love the story of the tutu, its transformation through the decades, its delicate elegance that celebrates feminine grace, its romantic allure. You just have to try twirling in one, darling, and see how it makes you feel!

Today, it is a symbol of everything lovely - grace, artistry, the joy of movement, and confidence.

Let's face it, every girl at heart, whether she's an accomplished dancer or just dreams of twirling around, wishes she could wear a tutu!

The tutu reminds me to dream big, to embrace life's challenges, and to always strive to express myself with grace and poise! I aim to see a tutu on every body - don’t let anyone tell you you’re too old for one, lovelies! Embrace your inner dancer, and let the tutu become an outward expression of your inner light.

Shopping for a Tutu – A Must-Have Parisian Treat

Oh, the delight of wandering through the Parisian shops! There's an art to searching for the perfect tutu, like a hunt for a hidden treasure, darting between elegant shops, browsing displays that make you swoon, then falling into a glorious trance amongst tiers of chiffon, silk, and lace.

One day, dear readers, I will open my own tutu shop in Derbyshire, but right now I'm simply soaking up inspiration here in the French capital.

For me, every tutu is like a little piece of art. I have tutus for every occasion – ballet class, street performance, even the theatre! You wouldn't believe the envious looks I get when I glide past at a ballet event, all swish and silk!

Let’s be honest, my life is pretty much a constant twirl, and a well-chosen tutu helps to fuel my passion for this dance!

Till Next Tuesday

And that’s it, dear readers, for this week’s #TutuTuesday. Until next time, keep twirling, keep dreaming, and never underestimate the power of a tutu to transform your world, be it pink, be it black, be it adorned with lace, feathers, or glitter, let it be the perfect expression of your own fabulous self!

Until we dance again,

Emma xx
