#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1923-10-09 - Post #4789!
Bonjour mes amies! It's Emma here, back again for another week of ballet history on Pink-Tutu.com. Today weāre venturing back to 1923, to a date that has got me seriously swirling! š©°āØ
So, Iāve just stepped off the train, leaving my Derbyshire countryside home for the bright lights of the Paris OpĆ©ra! Oh, how I do love travelling by train. It gives me time to get my daydreams in order - which right now involve tutus! You canāt even imagine the glorious, flouncy gowns they are sporting in the French capital! My travel bag is bursting with pink fabrics I picked up along the way, just waiting for a chance to turn them into dreamy tutus.
Speaking of tutus, this week Iām absolutely bursting to share something exciting: a ballet history gem!
October 9th 1923 - what a day for ballet! This date marks a truly monumental performance in the world of ballet!
Let me tell you, there was an electricity in the air that night at the Paris OpƩra. Everyone was buzzing, it felt like we were all about to be a part of history.
Now, 1923 ā weāre talking straight out of the āRoaring Twenties.ā The mood in Paris is a whirl of exciting change! Everyone's feeling sassy and fabulous and thereās this undeniable feeling in the air, that things are changing.
And nothing captures the energy of change better than ballet! Itās dynamic, expressive, exciting! A lot like myself, I think, if I do say so myself! š
The production that night was, well, simply revolutionary. This wasnāt just any production ā this was Le Sacre du Printemps.
Now, I know some of you out there have never heard of this magnificent masterpiece. It was, by the way, composed in 1913, by a Russian composer whoās really making a name for himselfā¦ Mr. Igor Stravinsky.
This āRite of Springā as they translate it ā well, imagine the buzz surrounding the music. I can still picture the energy in that beautiful opera house: that music! That rhythm! So full of raw power and passion. The most astounding use of sound to express raw energy!
I have to mention that the choreography that went along with āLe Sacre du Printempsā wasn't what everyone had expected back in 1913. Some were utterly shocking by what they saw. I've seen it myself - some very unconventional steps, the whole production bursting with raw, almost primitive energy! Think stomping, leaping, highly exaggerated motions ā definitely not what they were used to.
It even caused a riot in its first Paris performance. Some say it destroyed ballet. Others? They believe it rescued ballet. Whatever side youāre on, this was a moment of change. The world of ballet had never seen anything like it.
The choreography that revived "Le Sacre du Printemps" in 1923 was, well, a complete break from that shocking first attempt. They still retained a primitive vibe, it is meant to tell a very primal, natural story. Think a sacrifice - quite brutal, quite raw.
This performance in 1923 is seen by ballet scholars as crucial because it established this raw energy that makes it stand out still today. Itās what makes "Le Sacre" so gripping. It takes your breath away, and leaves you breathless long afterwards!
Can you imagine witnessing this transformation of āLe Sacre du Printempsā? The fact that they revived this incredible piece shows how powerful a piece of art can be. It resonated even through all those initial challenges, eventually making its way back to the heart of the Parisian ballet scene.
Whatās really exciting, I just love thinking how those dancers felt that night. Imagine the courage it must have taken for the ballerinas to put on their tutus and just go for it. This kind of dance needs more than just grace - it takes guts!
That intensity really resonated. This is the essence of "Le Sacre du Printemps", an art piece so raw that even after all these years, the power it holds is truly incredible. The ballet worldās shifting, and thatās a thing of beauty to behold, especially when itās expressed with tutus.
But you know me, my love is always pink tutus. Thereās an elegance about it, but also a vibrance and playfulness. You need something with a little oomph to get a powerful feeling across like āLe Sacreā! A beautiful, bright contrast.
Iād be wearing pink to this event, my darlings! Just think ā this iconic choreography on a grand stage in 1923. Oh, I could only imagine the effect it had!
And now imagine this: Itās not just the grand ballet theaters we need to talk about, darlings. Ballet moves in more than one place! In fact, that was how the art of ballet began, in the streets, not just the grand theatres. This is something I want to take back home, into Derbyshire, in my version of street ballet!
I think ballet street performances in pink tutus would just add a new dimension to the world! And to get to do that, to share this dream with everyone out there ā that is what I call a pink tutu moment. āØ
You want to know what I want to share today my loves? Get out your pink tutus, letās go to a performance of āLe Sacreā! I want to feel the raw power of āLe Sacre du Printemps,ā and I know you do too. Thatās how it makes a real impact ā not just through history, but through your hearts and souls! š
And my sweet readers, this is where I must say goodbye for now. My next journey? Why, a new theatre trip is on the cards, and guess what Iāll be looking at? Even more amazing ballet costumes. We must bring this gorgeous historical evolution of tutu history to life! š And of course, it wouldn't be complete without the gorgeous, playful tutu of my dreams. I love pink!
Don't forget to tune in next Tuesday for another amazing history trip! Itās time for my new ballet ballet performances! Oh my dear, I must rush! Itās almost showtime!
Yours in ballet history and pink tutus,
Emma
