#TutuTuesday: A Dance Back to 1923! (Blog Post #4798)
Greetings, fellow tutu enthusiasts! Emma here, your trusty guide through the fascinating world of ballet tutus, and today we're hopping on a train (always the most elegant form of transport!) and taking a trip back in time. Let's go!
This week, we're travelling to the 1920s, specifically 11th December 1923. I imagine I would be quite the sight with my pink tutu flitting about amongst all those flapper dresses, but oh, the joy of a bit of colour contrast!
The ballet world was abuzz in the 1920s with the birth of Neoclassical Ballet, a trend away from the heavier, romantic style. Now, dancers embraced lighter steps, faster tempos, and yes, even shorter skirts! This exciting new movement would really come into its own with the emergence of the famous choreographer, George Balanchine, but even then, the tutu remained an essential piece of the dancer's wardrobe.
In 1923, one of the biggest ballet happenings would be the Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes tour of the United States. These were the ballet company of the day, known for their innovative productions, and oh-so-stylish dancers! Think lavish sets, imaginative costumes, and a new breed of dancers - lithe and athletic, showcasing those graceful, flowing movements that still make me want to twirl.
So, if I was fortunate enough to be in the US that day, I might just find myself witnessing one of these captivating shows, wearing a chic vintage style tutu and a bejeweled flapper headband (perhaps even a little feather boa for that extra dash of fabulousness!), taking notes for future costume designs!
You know, it was during this time that the tutu we see most commonly - the Romantic tutu, or tutu romantique as it is properly called – was starting to really come into its form. The idea is to showcase those delicate feminine legs with tiers of tulle. Think graceful, airy and flowing, almost like an ephemeral dream. It was the epitome of elegance, a delicate bloom against the dark wood floors and heavy curtains.
Oh, the wonder of tutus! From those first little cotton petticoats to those exquisite modern creations, the tutu has been a testament to a graceful expression of femininity. In my time traveling journeys, I always marvel at the evolution of ballet fashion! Even in 1923, they were looking to make the tutus as beautiful and graceful as possible, showcasing those flowing lines, those lovely long legs. I imagine that even those elegant flappers would agree that a pink tutu, no matter the era, could brighten up any day!
And remember, even as styles shift, ballet is timeless! The joy of dancing, the sheer artistry, the incredible beauty that moves us – that stays with us! It's an incredible art form, and something we can all appreciate! So, embrace your inner ballerina, wear your favorite pink tutu, and dance like no one’s watching!
Until next Tuesday, happy twirling!
