As you all know, I am absolutely passionate about the history of the ballet tutu - it’s what makes my little tutu-wearing heart flutter with joy! There's something magical about how this garment has evolved throughout the years, taking us on a journey from the elegance of the 19th century to the expressive, modern tutus of today.
1924: The Age of Art Deco and the Rise of the Short Tutu
Stepping back in time, to the year 1924, we find ourselves at a thrilling time in dance history. It's a time when the Art Deco movement is sweeping across the globe, influencing fashion and the arts alike.
If you can imagine, the 1920s brought a revolutionary shift in dancewear - with dancers embracing a shorter style of tutu. The traditional long tutus, often reminiscent of romanticism, were ditched in favor of these newly sculpted, streamlined silhouettes, mirroring the clean lines of the Art Deco movement. This change gave dancers greater freedom of movement and allowed them to showcase their impressive physiques and dazzling techniques.
Fashion in 1924: The Flapper Era
It wasn’t just the world of ballet embracing a revolutionary fashion shift - the world at large was experiencing a whirlwind of change! Think of those iconic flapper dresses with their dropped waistlines, their shorter hemlines and sparkling embellishments - oh, so much sparkle! They were bold, playful, and oh so daring.
But we know what's really going to grab our attention: the sparkling sequins and shimmering beads that adorned the dancing shoes, headpieces and accessories, mirroring the glamour and allure of the Flapper era.
My Tutu Adventures in 1924
I’ve got to admit, when I stepped back in time to 1924, it was a veritable fashion feast! You know I'm absolutely mad for all things sparkling and shimmering. The costumes and the fashion! My time travelling wardrobe is chock-full of sparkling sequins and shimmering beading, ready to catch those stage lights and become the darling of the dance floor.
Now, where to find the most stylish accessories and embellishments, and to find the perfect shop for vintage flapper dresses... I have just the spot in mind… Oh, the joy! I do adore discovering a gorgeous vintage shop!
On the Train to the City
Now, if you are as passionate about fashion and ballet as I am, you would know that train journeys are the ultimate opportunity to let your imagination run wild. Just as the landscapes outside the window flash past, so does my mind race with ideas for my next tutu design! But we don't travel just for fashion! A trip to the ballet theatre is something truly special.
Imagine sitting in the stalls, gazing upon a magnificent stage with the soft glow of the lighting upon those beautifully lit performers, who have stepped back in time! To see how those exquisite garments translate from stage to shop window, from design sketch to real life – that's a dream come true for any ballet fanatic!
Don't Forget your Tutu
Of course, a journey into the world of 1924 wouldn’t be complete without paying a visit to one of those famous ballet theatres. My most favourite thing about going to a show is not only watching the beautiful dances, but also spotting all the different types of tutus the dancers wear. From the shimmering romantic tutus, those extravagant, classic, extravagant tutus, oh, it’s enough to send you into a complete state of blissful adoration!
My very favourite ballet theatre to visit back in the 1920s is Covent Garden - what a treasure trove of dance history! You'll find everything there: incredible ballet performances, a wonderful collection of tutus and costumes in the museum, and of course, opportunities to chat with passionate ballet lovers over a steaming cup of tea.
#TutuTuesday: Spreading the Love
Here’s my advice, darlings, for a successful time travelling escapade - take inspiration from those lovely short tutus and be brave, be bold, and be yourselves.
But here's my final thought. We might live in a world where fashion is constantly evolving, but at the heart of it all, is that love for the elegant tutu. It’s about creativity and expression and, for those lucky few, a career dancing and twirling around on a beautiful stage! I just hope my mission of inspiring everyone to wear a pink tutu has its place in this fast paced and ever evolving fashion world!
And before I go, don't forget to check out the full array of beautiful pink tutus on our website. We're just waiting for you to take your place on the pink tutu catwalk!
