Tutu Tuesday #4811: A Parisian Interlude – 11th March, 1924

Bonjour mes amis! Welcome to my blog, www.pink-tutu.com, your weekly dose of tutu history, fashion, and everything fabulous!

This week, I'm whisking you off to Paris! Imagine – the city of lights, the smell of freshly baked croissants wafting through cobbled streets, and, of course, the ballet! Ooh la la! I've just been transported back to the 1920s, to a world of bobbed hair, flapper dresses, and of course, the beginnings of the modern tutu!

It's the 11th March 1924, a brisk Tuesday morning. I'm bundled up in my pink faux fur coat (oh, I do adore this one – it matches my ballet slippers!), and am hopping off the train at Gare du Nord. Today's itinerary is simple – a trip to the Garnier Opera House to see Serge Diaghilev’s company perform a breathtaking production of *“The Sleeping Beauty.” *

Did I mention I love ballet shows? Especially “The Sleeping Beauty!” This production of “The Sleeping Beauty,” with its ethereal costumes and majestic dancing, is a marvel. And believe me, I've seen it performed more times than I can count – from the regal stages of Moscow’s Bolshoi to the intimate settings of quaint Derbyshire villages! The stories of beautiful ballerinas, princely knights, and enchanted castles have always captured my imagination.

The thing that always grabs me at a performance of "The Sleeping Beauty" is the breathtaking tutu – an explosion of shimmering silk and intricate construction. While it's not a classic romantic tutu, the elegance of the layered skirt design is a sight to behold, and I know it’s bound to be a true inspiration for future ballet designers.

While in Paris, I'll be indulging my shopping urges, too! The department stores are bustling with gorgeous new designs, the Art Deco style is a true beauty. Imagine, elegant robes draped in cascading beads and feathers – so utterly stylish! As a ballet lover, of course, my first stop will be at the "Au Printemps" department store, famous for its grand boulevards and elegant selection of dancewear. Just picture me flitting through the department, searching for the latest trends in tutu fashion and tutus that would make even the most celebrated ballerinas envious!

I may be indulging my Parisian fancies today, but even here in the glamorous City of Lights, the ballet scene is going through some dramatic transformations. Ballet companies like the Ballet Russe are taking the world by storm. It's exciting times, darling! New dance movements, new musical scores, new fashion and of course, new tutus are breaking boundaries. They're bringing revolutionary changes to ballet. This is a time when ballet's about to get real exciting and creative – it's bound to change how tutus are worn, crafted and danced with – the whole thing is revolutionised by these innovators, from Serge Diaghilev to Michel Fokine!

I even have my eye on a few vintage Parisian tutus! After all, one of the things I absolutely love about Paris is how it is a true repository of style and fashion, a city overflowing with creativity and imagination that truly sparks a love of life, and of course, fashion! Think chic little hats, dazzling bead-studded evening gowns, and an aura of joie de vivre.

But that's enough for today! I'm off to meet up with some fab new ballet friends I found at the Gare du Nord. Let me know what you think of Paris, and do tell me all about your tutu fancies! Let's keep the spirit of fashion, history and ballet alive.

Now, go on and sparkle, darling!

Lots of love,

Emma,
