Tutu Tuesday: #4813 – Back to the Roaring Twenties!
Hiya darlings! It's Emma here, your resident tutu-obsessed time traveller, back for another instalment of my weekly #TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History! This week, I’ve hopped back to 25th March, 1924, just a hop, skip and jump away from the wild world of the Roaring Twenties!
As I always say, there's no place quite like the vibrant, fast-paced era of jazz and flapper dresses! And wouldn't you know it, London is bursting with exciting new shows and fashionable trends! You can just imagine all those fabulously glamorous dancers twirling on stage in their shimmering silk gowns and stunning ostrich feather headdresses.
My first stop was the Covent Garden Opera House. Can you believe that today's a big night, the premiere of the newest production of "La Traviata" by none other than the esteemed Italian composer, Giuseppe Verdi! The anticipation was positively electrifying! It wasn't just the music I was interested in; it was the fashion darling! Think luxurious silks, elaborate costumes, and – whisper it – a hint of ballet!
That's right, ballet is beginning to sneak its way onto the big stage! While the ballet tutus as we know them today weren't fully established just yet, dancers were embracing the flowing lines and delicate femininity of tulle and chiffon skirts in their performance pieces. A new breed of expressive dancers, free from the confines of Victorian traditions, was emerging on the scene! It's all about captivating movement and dramatic flair – perfect for showcasing the allure and graceful poise of dance, isn't it?
After taking in the grandeur of Covent Garden, I went shopping for the perfect outfit! London's overflowing with shops! And oh my, the hats! We're talking about incredible fascinators, beautiful floral embellishments, and feather boas for a touch of showstopping elegance! But the real trend this year seems to be about elegance and fluidity, a departure from the tight corsets of the past! Just like the dancing styles changing, fashion's moving with it!
But no matter how fancy the evening gown, or how exciting the ballet moves are becoming, I was absolutely mesmerized by the colour of the moment: PINK! Imagine my delight! You all know my weakness for pink, it's just such a beautifully romantic and elegant shade, and 1924 London is simply buzzing with pink! The ladies are wearing it everywhere - in their outfits, on their hats, in their hair – even their shoes!
For a touch of vintage inspiration for your wardrobe, think of chiffon, silk, and beaded trims – a real mix of Parisian flair and London charm! Pair a pretty pink chiffon dress with a matching hat and a string of pearls for the ultimate Parisian glamour, and maybe add a touch of lace for a romantic twist!
Now, back to my personal quest! What better way to travel through time than to share my passion for the magic of ballet! So let's talk tutus!
While I might not be able to find a modern, picture-perfect, "princess ballerina" tutu in 1924, there's something beautifully unique about the tutus that were appearing on the dance scene here!
A glimpse into ballet’s past
In the past, even if a ballerina wasn't twirling in a classic tutus (they were not very prevalent at the time!) she would be using a lightweight skirt and skirt styles to enhance movement and expressiveness, it really brings the choreography to life!
The skirt of 1924 was often long, graceful, and quite flexible to the dancers' movements, with delicate lace detailing adding a whimsical and ethereal touch to their steps! Just imagine a symphony of swirling fabrics as the dancers leap across the stage - you can just picture it!
Speaking of beautiful movements, I've been totally inspired by this week's adventure to start a new routine in my ballet classes back home in Derbyshire. Imagine elegant and intricate steps flowing together, the tulle skirt sweeping around you, a little twirl in a vintage hat...
I might have travelled back in time, but I'm always drawing inspiration for the future!
The journey’s just beginning
Until next week, remember, no matter what you choose to wear, whether a delicate pink tulle dress or a fabulously fringed flapper outfit, always add a sprinkle of sparkle! Don’t be afraid to express yourself, try new styles, embrace a little glamour, and never forget to wear a smile as bright as the shimmering sequins of your dress!

Yours in tulle and feathers,
Emma
P.S. Want to know a little secret? I heard that a little gem called “The Nutcracker” will have its first ever public performance here in London, in the coming weeks! Now, if that's not a dance spectacle to look forward to, I don't know what is! *Stay tuned for a little trip back to see that beautiful Christmas classic in my next post!
