#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - Post #4815 - 8th April 1924
Hello lovelies, and welcome back to another glorious #TutuTuesday! It’s me, Emma, your favourite time-travelling, tutu-wearing fashionista. I’ve just hopped off the Orient Express, leaving behind the glitz and glamour of 1920s Paris and I’m absolutely bursting with inspiration to share. It seems every other shop window was a masterpiece of Art Deco! It truly was a dream!
Today’s date, 8th April 1924, is significant, not just because it's a Tuesday, but because it's all about a wonderful little tutu-themed detail! You see, on this very day, way back when, something pretty special happened: The Ballets Russes, everyone's favourite troupe, danced "La Boutique Fantasque" in Vienna! Imagine: the stage ablaze with colourful costumes, music swirling like the wind, and the most exquisite dancing you could imagine. They even had a ballerina who actually flitted like a little butterfly across the stage - I'm just imagining those sweet fluttering movements! Talk about ballerina dreams!
But darling, hold on to your bonnets, because we’re not just about ballet. 1924 was a year of incredible change for women's fashion, and what better place to be than right here in Paris, the heart of it all? Imagine chic bobs and feathered hats, those iconic flapper dresses and - just you wait for it! - the most divine accessories like those fabulous silk scarves, worn in a riot of colour and patterns, and dainty pearl necklaces that glistened in the afternoon sun.
The most beautiful thing about this era is the freedom women are finding through fashion. The loose, flowy dresses and the playful styles are so empowering! You can feel that joie de vivre just bursting out! And as you know, my dearest lovelies, nothing says “freedom” quite like a fluffy tutu, especially in PINK! (That's what I've been trying to say for ages!) 😉
Speaking of tutus, did you know that 1924 saw a big evolution in ballet wear, with tights becoming more popular and replacing stockings? Yes, it's a very important tutu-related detail. It sounds mundane, I know, but imagine it! More leg, more leg lines, more graceful lines from the hip to the pointe shoes. The beauty of ballet just bloomed like a delicate rose! And don't even get me started on the shoes - pointe shoes are an exquisite creation, a thing of sheer loveliness, designed for delicate grace and precise footwork!
I couldn't leave Paris without doing some serious ballet-inspired shopping! You know how much I adore fashion and its beautiful flow! First on the list was a fabulous hat with a feather plume as big as my skirt! The kind of hat that says, "Darling, look at me, I'm fabulous!" Then there were silk scarves - a whole rack of them! Just wait, they will soon be a feature of my wardrobe.
Of course, no trip would be complete without seeing a ballet performance! I managed to grab a ticket to the Opéra Garnier – a stunning piece of architecture and a place of magic! Watching those talented ballerinas grace the stage was an unforgettable experience, I tell you, I could just imagine their long, elegant legs in their exquisite ballet slippers dancing all those stories from Tchaikovsky to Debussy.
Oh! And the tutus! There are the classically romantic tutus - flowing tulle and ribbons, so light and dreamy, like spun sugar, like a cloud drifting across the stage! And then there are the bolder, modern ones - those shorter, edgier ones that were gaining traction at this time! I found them daring, like a rebellious rose in full bloom.
Speaking of rebellious, darling, are you ready for this? This week, I’m experimenting with a new way to make tutu-ing more accessible. I call it ballet street! It's a playful fusion of classic dance steps and the contemporary world! It's about wearing a pink tutu with pride! (Remember, this is important, darling - pink tutus.) Whether you're strutting your stuff at the supermarket or waltzing down the street, it’s all about spreading that delightful ballet spirit! You'll be amazed how many compliments you receive on a beautiful pink tutu, it's almost unbelievable! Let me know what you think! It’s all about finding a new rhythm in the world, in our lives, and yes, in our everyday fashion!
Now, let's get back to history! The 8th April 1924 - it was a day for innovation, style and grace. The Ballets Russes were making history, ballet was changing the fashion scene, and even my grand vision of tutus as a regular part of all women's wardrobes is slowly blooming. The time is perfect, the trends are in our favour. All we need to do is take those daring leaps, one step, one tutu, at a time!
See you next Tuesday, darlings! And remember: be brave, be bright, and always wear pink!
Emma xoxo
