#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through 1924! (Blog Post #4817)

Greetings, dear fellow tutu enthusiasts! It’s Emma here, your time-traveling tutu-tastic guide to the wonderful world of ballet! I’m back with another dose of #TutuTuesday history, this time whisking us back to Tuesday, 22nd April, 1924.

Let’s hop on my trusty steam engine – the train’s a fabulous way to travel for seeing all the world’s latest fashions, just like the Parisian couturiers of the era – and set off for a tutu-tastic adventure!

A Fashionable Whirlwind in 1924:

Oh darling, can you imagine being a fashionable young lady in the 1920s? It’s a glorious mix of the Victorian and the modern! You see, 1924 is in the heart of the roaring 20s! We’re talking flapper dresses, bobs, daring shorter hemlines – it’s simply fabulous! We’ve gone from long, billowing gowns to shorter, looser dresses and flapper fringe.

This new wave of fashion influenced ballet as well. The iconic tight, fitted bodice with a floating skirt look, still very much with us, first gained prominence in the early 20th century. It was all about highlighting movement and a less-restricted sense of movement – goodbye to corsets!

While you’ll still see some graceful ballet performances with the fuller, flowing tulle skirts – those still remain popular! Think The Sleeping Beauty – those dramatic tutus were breathtaking. It was a fascinating era with designers still finding their way into a less cumbersome fashion.

Our Trip to Paris

So, where would a tutu-loving lady like myself head to in 1924? Paris, of course! This bustling, cultural haven is THE fashion capital of the world, just like it is now! We need to see those amazing hats, beautiful silks and vibrant colour combinations!

The Paris Opera Ballet is having a fabulous performance of “Coppélia” tonight. Imagine! This beautiful tale of love, deception and an ingenious doll, is still beloved in the ballet world. How I love seeing those perfectly coordinated ballet tutus, the enchanting stories woven by graceful bodies – all those delightful details, my dear!

I'll be visiting a fabulous hat shop, the most glamorous one in Paris, after the ballet to find a stunning headpiece to pair with my most beautiful tutu for tomorrow's Parisian afternoon tea! I do love finding beautiful and unique outfits – it’s part of the joy of time travel!

Tutu Thoughts

What will this trip bring? My fellow fashionistas, I'll be sure to take notes on all the wonderful Parisian styles I spot. Do let me know if there’s a specific vintage ballet style that catches your eye and you’d like to know more about it! You can reply below in the comments – do write your question with your name in case I’m too busy buying fabrics or picking up the most elegant parasol!

Until next Tuesday, keep twirling and stay glamorous!

Emma
