Tutu Tuesday #4837: A Trip to 1924!
Greetings, lovely tutu lovers! It’s Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-wearing, time-traveling ballet aficionado, bringing you another fascinating chapter in #TutuTuesday's Ballet Tutu History. This week, I’m taking you on a whirlwind adventure back to 9th September 1924, where tutus were taking centre stage in a truly thrilling way!
My time machine, cleverly disguised as a vintage suitcase with a secret compartment (you wouldn’t believe the amount of sequins I can squeeze in there!), deposited me in the heart of London. I swear, the smell of horse-drawn carriages and the joyous melodies wafting from street musicians were enough to send me swooning! And let me tell you, the fashion! Absolutely divine! Those 1920s flapper dresses were all about effortless glamour and bold, daring designs. Oh, the chic bobbed hairstyles and sparkling beads, it was a sight to behold!
Now, for our star attraction – the tutus! Picture this: I found myself amidst a flurry of pink feathers and delicate tulle as I waltzed into the magnificent Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. The stage was set for a performance of Tchaikovsky's breathtaking "Swan Lake", and the dancers, oh my goodness, they looked utterly magical! They floated across the stage with a lightness that took my breath away, their shimmering tutus practically shimmering in the warm theatre lights. These tutus were just a touch shorter than those we know today, still revealing just a little bit of leg for a playful touch of femininity. The classic white colour dominated, showcasing the dancers' graceful forms, and some even featured exquisitely detailed designs in the fabric – a true testament to the artistry and craft involved.
Of course, no trip to London in 1924 is complete without a jaunt down Oxford Street! Oh, the delights of discovering enchanting shops brimming with vibrant colours, luxurious silks, and the first whispers of Art Deco designs. It was an absolute haven for any ballet enthusiast. I practically drooled over the selection of tulle and satin ribbons, all destined to become the fabric of dreams in a magnificent new tutu! But alas, I had to stick to my time-travel budget, so I settled for admiring the luxurious offerings.
This Tuesday’s Tutu Tuesday is extra special because it coincided with a very important ballet event in 1924: The world premiere of "The Rake's Progress", by the brilliant choreographer, Frederick Ashton! This ballet wasn't only groundbreaking for its bold, abstract approach to movement and its revolutionary story, but it also paved the way for contemporary dance to become a force in its own right!
The vibrant spirit of 1920s London, the dazzling tutus, and the breathtaking ballets… this trip has left my tutu heart filled to the brim with inspiration. You know, sometimes it's not just about the tutus, but the beautiful stories they help tell, the timeless art they embody, and the joy they bring.
Now, I have a burning question for all of you: Which of the ballet performances I've mentioned would you most love to see? And why, of course! Share your thoughts in the comments below.
P.S. Do any of you lovely readers have any special plans for Tutu Tuesday? Remember, every day is a celebration of all things tutu, but Tuesdays are a little extra special for us!
