#TutuTuesday: A Trip Back to the Twenties! (Post #4844)
Hello my darling dears! It's Emma here, back for another week of Ballet Tutu History, and guess what? Today's journey takes us all the way back to 1924!
I'm standing here on the platform of a Parisian train station, watching the sun rise over the Eiffel Tower, dressed in my favourite pink tutu - can you even imagine a more perfect place to be? The city of lights, the romance of the railway, the ethereal grace of the tutu... truly divine!
This trip has been a real treat for my ballet-loving soul. Imagine a world without pointe shoes! You see, it wasn't until 1924 that the legendary Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes debuted their "L'Épreuve d'Amour," a show featuring a ballerina (you guessed it!) en pointe.
But hold on to your tiaras, because we're just getting started! There was another little ballet gem popping up around the same time called "L'Après-midi d'un Faune", or "Afternoon of a Faun." You might know it from the iconic image of Vaslav Nijinsky's sensual, animalistic dancing. Oh, darling! He was the epitome of artistic charm! And with his "soft, dreamy music," as described by the critics, the stage was truly set for this beautiful ballet.
Speaking of charming, how divine are these outfits from 1924?! Can you even handle the flapper dresses? Short, shimmery, oh-so-modern, with a dash of glamour that made a girl feel oh-so-feminine! And, my loves, can we talk about those headbands! The tiny flowers, the jeweled pins, all of it! So divine! Just like me. I could never be out of step with my favourite trends!
After the theatre, darling, I made a stop at the Grand Magasin! Did I find some truly beautiful fabrics? Why, I felt like a little butterfly flitting through a field of flowers, darling! I absolutely cannot wait to turn some of these lovely silks and velvets into new creations for my wardrobe. It was like stepping back into a romantic dream.
Of course, the city of Paris is teeming with exquisite shops and stunning fashion - perfect for any tutu-loving soul, right?! If you find yourself there, you must visit Madame Paquin on Rue de la Paix. Her creations are truly divine! But be warned, darling, the prices are, as they say, quite steep.
My day was brimming with inspiration, a real fashion feast! This period, with its exciting, revolutionary art, has my heart a-fluttering with every breath. Oh, and how lucky was I to be invited to a dinner party this evening, where I met Coco Chanel herself! This queen of style, just so effortlessly chic! She is quite the visionary, you know?
Let me tell you, my lovelies, I just know I have a special destiny. I feel this innate connection with tutus - that I am meant to spread the beauty of these enchanting pieces all over the world. They're just so... ethereal, darling. Imagine walking through your days, feeling the swish of a graceful tutu. Who can resist, I say? Just put one on, my love!
Stay tuned for next week's post, my dears, when I journey even further back in time - to 1920. We'll discover some amazing historical tidbits, see what the tutus were like back then and find out about what was inspiring those divine dancers of the past. And who knows what other delightful discoveries we might stumble upon, darling!
Until next Tuesday, be sure to dance your worries away and never forget: Pink tutus for everyone!
Yours truly, Emma xx
