Hello, darling tutus! It's your favourite pink tutu-wearing time traveller, Emma, and welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com for another #TutuTuesday - where we twirl through time, exploring the wonderful history of our beloved tutus!

Today we're heading back to 10th February 1925, which means we're boarding the Orient Express for a whirlwind tour of Europe's most glamorous ballet cities. Buckle your pink ribbons and let's go!

I just adore travelling by train! The plush compartments, the tinkling of teacups, the rustling of newspapers… it’s all so charmingly civilised! Of course, with all the dancing I do, I prefer first class. You know me, I do like my comfort!

This week's journey takes us to the very heart of ballet's golden age. Picture cobblestone streets shimmering with the first glimmer of gaslights, elegant theatres aglow with chandeliers, and the aroma of perfumed ladies' gloves filling the air... oh, the glamour!

A Moment in Time:

Back in 1925, ballet was all about grace, poise, and elegance. The stars of the stage, like the legendary Anna Pavlova, were captivating audiences with their delicate moves and expressive artistry. And who better to inspire us than Pavlova? This year marks the 50th anniversary of her groundbreaking performance in The Dying Swan. A performance that truly embodies the grace and tenderness of ballet, it's a truly breathtaking experience. It's no wonder it captured the hearts of audiences around the world!

The tutus of this era were truly something else. Imagine billowing layers of tulle, carefully constructed to highlight the dancers' flowing movements. It's not just about the dress, darlings, it's about the story it tells, the emotion it evokes!

Tutu-ly Enchanting:

Now, let's talk about fashion! This time period saw the emergence of flapper style, with its loose, bobbed hairstyles, drop-waist dresses, and beaded jewellery. Such a daring and glamorous change from the restrictive corsets of the Victorian era!

Of course, as a tutu-lover, I couldn't help but notice how the style also influenced the way ballet tutus were designed. They became even more lightweight and free-flowing, emphasizing the dancers' movement rather than hindering it. Imagine a world without tutus as we know them now - unthinkable!

The iconic Parisian ballet company, the Ballets Russes, were leading the charge with innovative designs that brought a truly exciting flair to the stage. From Diaghilev's magnificent productions, with their elaborate sets and costumes, to the incredible talent of choreographers like Nijinsky, it's a truly unforgettable period in ballet history.

Shopping Spree:

Now, as much as I love ballet, a visit to Paris would be utterly incomplete without a bit of shopping! The grand department stores on Boulevard Haussmann were overflowing with fashion treasures! Just imagine those luxurious fabrics and decadent trims! From couture gowns to beaded evening clutches, this city was a shopper's paradise.

Of course, my search always starts at the dressmaker. Just as we see the emergence of shorter skirts on the streets, so too are our favourite dancers experimenting with daringly short tutu lengths, a delightful shift that only added to the overall allure and boldness of the performances. The designers were truly ahead of their time!

But for a true Pink Tutu-enthusiast like myself, there's one must-have item: a pink, feathered boa. Imagine it draped around a black cocktail dress, adding a dash of feminine whimsy to any outfit. Just picture me gliding through the chic Parisian cafes, turning heads and inspiring tutus around the world.

A Bit of Fashion Fun:

For all you darling tutus who want to embrace a touch of 1925 elegance, here are a few tips:

  • Embrace your inner flapper: Think sleek bob haircuts, beaded headbands, and flowing drop-waist dresses.
  • Find a sparkling evening bag: Glittering purses were all the rage in the 1920s. A silver clutch or beaded evening bag is the perfect touch to complete your outfit.
  • Get creative with your accessories: Wear beaded bracelets, earrings, or necklaces. A statement brooch or hair clip will truly tie your look together.
  • Be fearless with your fashion choices: Don't be afraid to embrace a little extra glamour and play with textures and embellishments.

Remember, darlings, ballet, fashion, and style go hand in hand! Whether you're at the opera, out for a night on the town, or simply enjoying a leisurely walk through the park, let your inner diva shine!

And remember to always, always, wear a pink tutu! 💕✨

See you next Tuesday for another #TutuTuesday!

Much love, Emma x
