#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 14th April 1925
Hello darlings! It's your favourite pink-tutu-wearing, time-travelling blogger, Emma, here, back with another #TutuTuesday history blog! Today we're twirling back to the fabulous year 1925. 🩰
It feels positively dreamy, travelling to this era! The energy is electrifying, the fashion is oh-so-glamorous, and the tutus? Absolutely breathtaking!
I'm writing this from the heart of ballet's most iconic city – Paris! Can you imagine the excitement? I can't resist a quick peek into the elegant boutiques for the latest trends (I must have a pair of those sleek new cloche hats!), and, of course, a visit to the legendary Opéra Garnier.
The year 1925 was an incredibly important year for the world of dance! Ballet was truly starting to blossom in all its glorious, graceful form. It was a time for revolutionary ideas, with dancers like Anna Pavlova pushing the boundaries of movement, and iconic choreographers like Diaghilev introducing revolutionary ballet shows. Imagine – the birth of what we know as "ballet"! Just magical, isn't it?
So, let's dive into our time machine and see what was happening in the world of ballet on 14th April 1925. This is a Tuesday, which means it was a day for performance at the Opera Garnier, the most beautiful opera house I have ever seen! What could be better? My trip to the grand city of lights isn't complete without visiting the incredible theatre of Opera Garnier and watching the wonderful ballets in all their glorious costumes! The ballets of the Ballets Russes, particularly those with a lavish style, have a certain romance I simply cannot get enough of! I can almost hear the gentle strains of Tchaikovsky's music and the magical melody of the waltz! Oh how my toes itch to pirouette! The magic of ballet! It was definitely a night to remember for this little tutu-lover, with dancers showcasing their exquisite movements and skills on stage, I was awestruck!
But it wasn't just the world of dance that was shimmering and sparkling – fashion in 1925 was just as captivating! I adore how it blends elegance with an irresistible charm, just like a ballet dancer herself! The flapper dresses with their bold cuts and shimmering sequins perfectly compliment the era's energy, and of course, who can forget those glamorous feathered hats and exquisite gloves? It was a fashion-forward age! I can’t resist slipping into some of those beautiful dresses, although I have a secret weakness for a good old tutu. Nothing beats a beautifully flowing, graceful tutu, in my humble opinion!
You know, back in my Derbyshire home, the Victorian era seems so far away in terms of dress! I feel so liberated! And speaking of dresses, what better accessory to a beautifully cut flapper dress or, of course, a tutu than a glamorous accessory of fine jewelry, such as a necklace, earrings or bracelet, the ladies looked absolutely incredible and glamorous!
Now, here’s a fun fact that I discovered at the grand, old Library in Paris! Did you know that on 14th April 1925, a fascinating story made the headlines about the amazing discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb in Egypt? How fabulous! It's amazing to imagine all the treasure, the history, and the stories from the past buried inside those magnificent walls. It makes me wonder if there was ever a story from the ballet world that was just as remarkable and legendary – but for this era, perhaps its ballet and its captivating fashion history we'll have to look back to when deciding!
And that, my lovely readers, wraps up our #TutuTuesday for today. I'll be heading back to Derbyshire soon, where I'm planning on organising a vintage-inspired dance class for all you darling tutus, I think everyone should have a tutu to call their own! Be sure to check in next Tuesday for another amazing adventure into the history of the tutu, it's my absolute favourite time travel experience!
Until then, happy twirling,
Your favourite pink-tutu wearing blogger,
Emma xoxo
