Tutu Tuesday #4917: A Twirl Back in Time!

Hello, my darling tutu enthusiasts! Welcome back to another Tuesday of tutus, where we take a twirl through history and celebrate the magnificent evolution of the ballerina’s most beloved garment! This week, we’re putting on our dancing shoes and taking a trip back to the roaring twenties, specifically March 23rd, 1926.

You’re probably picturing flapper dresses and jazz music, right? And you wouldn’t be wrong! The 1920s were a time of radical change, with a whole new era of fashion blossoming in the wake of the First World War. And of course, that includes the evolution of the tutu!

Imagine for a moment, darling, if we were whisked back to that very day, stepping off a beautifully polished train from my beloved Derbyshire, onto a platform of excited chatter and laughter.

I imagine we’d see ladies with sleek bobs and dropped waists, flapper dresses practically skimming the knees, and yes, darling, our favourite tutus would be getting a whole new lease on life!

Remember those stiff, full tutus with their miles of layers and yards of tulle, so heavy they practically weighed a ballerina down? Those lovely things were starting to feel a little passé in the roaring twenties. We had new ideas about fashion, darling, and our tutus weren't going to be left behind!

The 1920s was a time for movement, for freedom, and for liberation, and our tutus reflected that perfectly! They became lighter, shorter, and more fitted, allowing dancers a new sense of fluidity and elegance.

It’s like the world, and fashion, and ballet all said, “Let's do the Charleston! Let’s go for a twirl!”

And oh darling, it’s a pleasure to watch it all unfold! The evolution of the tutu is a beautiful reminder of how fashion adapts, flourishes, and mirrors the changing world around us.

Imagine, darling, watching dancers pirouette with effortless grace in their shorter, streamlined tutus. They'd be so easy to twirl in, I bet even you could have a go.

Speaking of twirling, this Tuesday brings to mind the famous ballet La Boutique Fantasque, a work of sheer, joyful, colourful exuberance that really brings out the essence of the 1920s! Imagine this vibrant story filled with dolls and dancing puppets, with whimsical characters in charmingly elegant tutus!

The colours! Darling, just the mention of them fills my head with dreams of pastels and bright, saturated tones. You can picture me now, darling, skipping into a little vintage clothing shop, drawn to all those beautiful pieces, from vibrant cloche hats to those perfect drop-waisted dresses with a hint of flapper-esque drama!

Oh, the thrill of shopping in the 1920s! I'm dreaming of velvet gowns and bejewelled headbands, all paired, of course, with my perfect, flowing pink tutu! After all, we need to keep a little bit of pink in all things!

The 1920s really were a magical time for ballet, darling, a period where we saw a perfect marriage of grace and style. Imagine being there! Feeling the beat of the Charleston in the air, and hearing those jazzy notes in your heart.

But we can’t forget what we owe to those glorious earlier tutus. They were the pioneers of dance and a reminder that the love for ballet and fashion goes back generations. They remind us of all those passionate dancers, their feet en pointe, telling their stories and making our hearts sing with every leap and twirl.

Darling, my time machine is calling, and I'm off on another exciting journey, searching for more tutus to add to my growing collection of dancing history. Remember, my sweet dears, to keep twirling and dreaming, and to wear a pink tutu always, or, as I like to say, be your own fairytale!

Until next time,

Emma
