#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 11th May 1926
Hello my darling tutu-lovers! Emma here, back for another whirlwind tour of our fabulous tutu history, and trust me, you're in for a treat today. We're stepping back in time to 11th May 1926! Iām off to the theatre tonight, so get your best pink tutu ready for a fabulous evening!
Today is, I feel, very special. Not just for me, because Iām in London at this very moment, all ready for a night at the ballet, but it was a huge moment in ballet history!
The Great Dame!
Today we remember the incredible dancer and actress Dame Marie Rambert. A total legend of the dance world. You see, she was one of the pioneers of modern dance!
Remember 11th May 1926 ladies. It's a big day for modern ballet! She's considered one of the pioneers, a driving force, she's changed things for women like us! I can practically hear her encouraging you to reach for the sky with your pink tutus, my darlings.
Let me tell you, the modern ballet style she helped introduce has definitely put the ātutā into ātutuā!
She loved experimentation. She's always had an eye for design, a creative mind with endless flair, and you could tell her creativity in every outfit! Marie actually even had a clothing label!
You know how I said you could practically hear her encouraging you to wear pink tutus? Well, in those days, pink was all the rage! Fashion trends changed like a pirouette, my darlings!
This was also the time of flapper dresses, a style all about flaunting curves and looking as chic as possible! Just like today! The same could be said for all of us lovely ladies, I'd say. I think we are all stylish! But this fashion forward trend has definitely got to make an appearance again - imagine all of us with feather boas, my lovelies, wearing our pretty little tutus, it would be divine!
Back in those days though, wearing a tutu out and about, on a day-to-day basis? Oh, darling, not yet. But trust me, weāre getting there. Soon, Iāll be telling you the history of tutu fashion and when you all were allowed to sport your pink fluffy treasures, everywhere!
This isnāt just about ballet, dear readers. This is about style! Itās about being yourself, pushing boundaries, and finding what makes you feel incredible.
And that, darling, is what Marie Rambert, the woman behind it all! She helped to put dance front and centre.
Fancy a trip?
This is why I think London, darling, London is so FABULOUS! I took the train down this morning from Derbyshire. A perfect way to see the country and itās always an adventure! Today I just hopped off, headed to my favourite dressmaker for a new pair of tutu ballet shoes, then grabbed the most magnificent cup of afternoon tea - with, naturally, a delicious strawberry slice. The day's only just begun, my darlings! And you know what, the people at the tea shop looked up, gasped, and admired my beautiful tutu. Whoād have thought a pink tutu in this era was considered chic?!
Tutu Trends, then and now!
You know, back then, everyone wanted to wear tutus. I see it again and again when I time-travel. Youāve gotta admire it - and I know I certainly do! But as with so many things, you can't wear the same style of tutu everywhere! The shape and the design of tutus back in this era were about poise and precision ā think swan lake, very elegant and ethereal, graceful with a long sweeping line. Think of prima ballerinas, and the elegance of the dance! They certainly got the tutus and their shapes just right, I have to say. The designs and shape are just as crucial, for me, to my tutus as the colour. Itās so important. The length, the layers, all very important for the perfect dance. The design has got to make you want to dance.
The tutu had to help the dancer to tell a story - to be swans, fairies, graceful beings that floated and glided! Think of tutus of that era - the classic lines, the light material, delicate fabric and delicate designs - a true testament to the artistry of the ballet dancers.
In the ballet shows Iāve been lucky enough to attend this week, itās all been so beautifully choreographed, such elegant and wonderful dances. Thatās a big part of the reason why tutus became, as you see from my history of tutus on my Pink Tutu blog, the ultimate statement piece. We are dancing our way towards the future ladies, where every single woman has a tutu!
I love the colour, but most of all I love the shapes. And my love for tutus of all styles and colours ā well, that's my favourite fashion piece.
A quick tutu quiz, my lovelies!
Speaking of shape! And since weāre talking ballet, which type of tutu is the best one to show your best moves on a theatre stage? Thatās right, my lovely Tutu followers, itās a bell tutu - because the bell tutu lets every dancer look stunningly elegant when theyāre moving, with that beautiful bell shape spreading outwards - oh my darling tutus, I have got to get a new bell tutu this month! What shapes youāre thinking of - is it bell, classical, pancake, or a tulle tutu, all great. The choices are simply divine. Pancake tutus, tulle tutusā¦ The choices we have are endless my darlings, itās a dream! The perfect tutu for you is one that reflects your personality, it has got to match the style of your dancing and most importantly, youāve got to love wearing it!
Now, my dear readers, remember the tutus are here for you - we wear them with confidence. Think about it! In modern day - I'm already planning what Iām going to wear tonight! Pink, of course! The perfect outfit to go and see a ballet show! And after I finish with my tutu tonight, Iām taking my trusty sewing machine to do some crafting. Because when you think about it we need more tutu styles! More colours. The world needs them, donāt you think! And who knows, my lovelies! You might just see a new tutu style on me at the Pink Tutu blog. So stay tuned, and donāt forget to look out for my blog post next Tuesday. Remember, it's TutuTuesday, every Tuesday! Until next time! XOXO
P.S. I nearly forgot, my darlings. Remember Dame Marie Rambert? Well if you are lucky enough to have London as your city, visit The Rambert dance company - their work continues the artistic legacy of this amazing dancer. Theyāre doing what they love. Itās all about passion. You have to admit it's pretty inspiring - all because a beautiful pink tutu wearing, dance-loving woman dreamed of an incredible future and helped create it!
