#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: June 29th, 1926

Hello my darling tutu lovers! Welcome back to Pink Tutu, your one-stop shop for all things frilly and fabulous! I'm your resident time-traveling tutu aficionado, Emma, and I'm absolutely delighted you've joined me today. It's #TutuTuesday and you know what that means - a delve into the wonderful world of tutu history!

Today, I've whizzed back to June 29th, 1926. Imagine, just a few years before the Great Depression swept through, but the world of ballet was already beginning to buzz with excitement and innovation! Fashion, always a captivating subject, was experiencing a glamorous change as well. This time, it wasn't all about extravagant, floor-length gowns (although they certainly held their place!). A new era of fashion had begun, one that favoured flapper dresses with dropped waists, shorter hemlines and beads aplenty.

Now, let's talk about the ballet world - imagine Parisian stages, grand opera houses and an atmosphere crackling with anticipation! The ballerina costumes of this era were a feast for the eyes. Gone were the heavy, restrictive, and somewhat frumpy "romantic" tutus of the past. Enter the tutu à la Camargo! Now this was a tutu designed to highlight the graceful fluidity of movement, it clung to the legs with silk, allowing the ballerina to pirouette and jump with unfettered freedom.

In 1926, the iconic Serge Diaghilev, the mastermind behind Ballets Russes, was pushing the boundaries of the art form. Imagine ballets bursting with colour, exquisite music and intricate choreography. The stage was a world of fantastical beauty, with ballerinas twirling and leaping in tutus, crafted with the utmost elegance and flair!

Just think, the dance world was celebrating the power of the tutu in a completely new way. And here's something exciting – this era saw the birth of ballet on film.

I must confess, I did have the most delightful time during my trip! I was in Vienna, a city I must admit to having a secret crush on, particularly as it's the birthplace of Mozart. Vienna holds a place in my heart. I popped along to the Vienna State Opera House, a stunning building, its majestic architecture giving me goosebumps! The performance I saw was breathtaking!

Afterwards, I wandered through the charming streets, soaking up the atmosphere, savoring the sounds of the city's lively heart. As dusk began to fall, casting long shadows over Vienna, I happened upon a grand salon filled with vibrant colors, a celebration of dance and music. And of course, there were plenty of beautiful tutus, perfectly styled for this glamorous era!

Remember, you don't have to travel through time to get your dose of ballet. If you're like me and find yourself in Derbyshire, you might stumble upon The Buxton Opera House - another wonderful, historical space brimming with creativity and performance. Why not consider visiting your local theater or attending a dance class yourself?

Here’s a fun fact that will make your tutu-wearing heart flutter: this year (1926) saw a particularly iconic piece: 'Les Biches' (The Does) by the ballet master Bronislava Nijinska. This piece, considered groundbreaking in its depiction of female beauty, pushed the boundaries of modern ballet, introducing unconventional elements to a world captivated by the grace of traditional ballerinas! And guess what? It was performed at the world-renowned Paris Opera House – how absolutely chic!

The world was moving at a breathless pace in 1926, just like those nimble ballerinas. I'm a bit sad to leave this period – and this delightful Viennese atmosphere, it was just brimming with such creativity!

This #TutuTuesday, let’s celebrate all things feminine and graceful. So grab your most vibrant tutu (I'm particularly partial to pink), dance like no one’s watching, and let the spirit of those captivating 1926 ballerinas fill your heart.

Until next week, remember, my lovelies - never let anyone tell you you can't wear a tutu! Keep it pink, keep it fabulous!

Much love and many twirls,

Emma
