Tutu Tuesday #4972: A Whirlwind Trip to 1927 - Dancing with the Decades!
Greetings from your favourite tutu-loving time-traveller, Emma!
I’m so excited to be back for another week of #TutuTuesday! Today, we’re taking a journey to 1927 - a year that was as stylish as it was daring, much like my favourite tutus!
Imagine the excitement of being back in the roaring twenties! It was the dawn of flapper fashion, and even in the ballet world, things were getting more daring. Think shorter skirts, loose dresses, and a move away from the rigid corseted style of the past. We see this reflected in the way dancers moved and even the types of tutus worn on stage!
It was all so exhilarating to experience. Just as you wouldn’t be caught dead in the old-fashioned bustle and corset nowadays, the ladies of 1927 were embracing a new wave of movement and expression in their clothes, and it was thrilling!
Onwards to Paris: My Favourite Tutu Spot!My time machine dropped me straight onto a bustling Parisian street - how delightful! The smell of freshly baked bread mingling with the fragrant scent of perfumes in the air - it's a Parisian thing you can't help but love. But it was the fashion that truly drew me in. Paris, even then, was a world of sophistication, and the women here embraced the latest trends, whether it be at a swanky salon, or just strolling through the city.
Today was especially exciting - it was the opening night of the Paris Opera! Can you even imagine the rush of emotions - a dazzling premiere, a sea of glittering jewels and sequins, and of course, the iconic, if slightly longer-than-we’d like, tutus of the ballet. And trust me, the excitement was infectious!
I love how everyone seemed so effortlessly stylish - even the everyday wear was sleek and stylish, all thanks to the designers of this golden age. Imagine this - the new Parisian woman wearing a stunning crepe dress paired with an elegantly cut top, a cloche hat perched jauntily atop her head, and of course, perfectly painted lips and fingernails. And you could easily spot a flapper in a stunning dress that was that much shorter - revealing more leg and a touch of daredevil spirit.
Of course, every era has its beauty, but for a ballet and tutu enthusiast like me, 1927 was especially interesting because of the ballet world. It’s fascinating how ballet fashion began to adapt to this revolutionary change in attitudes! We even started to see the evolution of what we’d call today the ‘ballet slipper’, or the 'pointe shoe'. A big change from the previous styles which were much sturdier and harder. Much less grace and much more clomp, clomp! Imagine how many bunions poor ballerinas used to have to get through each show. We've certainly come a long way, eh?
The Perfect Tutu for a Parisian DebutSince I was going to watch the show from a plush velvet box, it would be churlish not to put on a tutu. After all, what’s better than enjoying an exciting performance with the knowledge that you’re adding your own little touch of magic? My choice? Well, of course, it had to be pink!
You wouldn’t believe the fun I had trying on all sorts of styles to match the Paris theme! I wanted something bold yet classic - that’s the best of both worlds! A vintage French style tutu with cascading layers of luxurious pink tulle was the way to go - like the Eiffel Tower in swirling layers of pink tulle! It's such a whimsical idea - all of Paris in a tutu! It would definitely turn heads in the grand opera house, which is my style, but then again, you wouldn’t expect anything else from me, would you?
But, my lovelies, I must leave you now, the stage is calling! As you know, a good ballerina's work is never truly done!
But, before I go, please make sure you share this post with all your ballet-loving friends and family. I want everyone to experience the magic of the tutu! Happy twirling, darling!
Until next #TutuTuesday!
Emma xx
