#TutuTuesday: A Twirl Back in Time to 1928 - The Tutu Takes Centre Stage!
Greetings, dear readers! It's Emma here, your favourite tutu-clad time traveller, ready to take you on another dazzling journey through the world of ballet history. Today we're whisking back to 6th March, 1928 - and let me tell you, things were a-fluttering!
Fashion Frenzy:
I found myself in Paris, that chic and ever-so-fashionable capital of dance. Picture it, darling - boulevard cafes buzzing with lively chatter, stylish men in pinstripe suits, ladies in fabulous flapper dresses, all in a tizzy for the latest ballet trends.
And what was all the fuss about? Why, tutus of course! Oh my dears, these were a far cry from the delicate and airy tutus of today. Back then, they were long, almost knee-length, and adorned with a multitude of layers of tulle, like a dreamy cloud spun into being. You wouldn't find those bright, bold pinks that I love so much, either - it was all about the subtler hues of pastel pink, baby blue, and a dash of blush - just like a watercolour painting, if you will.
Imagine dancing in that grandness, all those yards of luxurious tulle, swishing and twirling, making you feel like you were floating on air! The designers weren't afraid to embrace embellishments either, so we had the finest feathers, delicate beads, and sparkling sequins sprinkled throughout. It was simply exquisite!
The Stars of the Stage
That evening, I enjoyed a simply divine performance of "La Sylphide" by the illustrious Ballets Russes. Now, you simply must try to picture a scene from this time - a dazzling stage, twinkling spotlights illuminating dancers, who looked as ethereal as the angels in the heavens themselves, floating around in those long, flowing tutus. The air was electrifying with energy and sheer joy of movement. Every leap, every arabesque, was a testimony to the hard work and dedication of the dancers.
The lead ballerina, the always beautiful Olga Spessivtseva, danced with grace and effortless elegance in a tutu that was truly the picture of enchantment. It was all so beautiful, I swear my heart fluttered just watching her! There was a real artistry to those performances back in those days, a sense of drama and romance that I find deeply inspiring.
Travel on the Rails:
Now, how do I get around all this time travel, you ask? Well, you can guess my favourite mode of transport, can't you? A journey by train, naturally! That smooth rumble as it cuts through the countryside, the sense of adventure in the air - it's simply exhilarating! The compartments are all beautifully designed and polished with leather upholstery, just like stepping into a fancy gentleman's club. Then I simply perch myself by the window with my copy of The Times or Vogue magazine and I'm swept away on a fabulous journey to the past, present or future!
Tutus for Every Day
Of course, a trip like this is never complete without a spot of shopping. Now, dear readers, let me share a secret with you. Even though these glorious tutus were strictly the domain of the ballerinas in the 1920s, I spotted some real fashionistas starting to embrace this iconic dancewear for casual wear, imagine that!
They wore their versions with flapper dresses for that added flourish, or layered over silk slip dresses for an extra dash of glamour. You just know the idea will soon catch on - a world full of ladies looking like a cloud of beauty as they flutter about, who could resist the allure?
Next Tuesday's Tutu Adventures!
This little peek into the past was just a snippet of the grand ballet world of 1928. As always, my dears, there are so many fascinating details to uncover! I'm off on another exciting tutu time-travelling escapade. Don't forget to join me next Tuesday for another installment of #TutuTuesday - you'll want to be the first to find out where I'll be transporting myself and what fabulous tutu moments I will unearth!
And please, keep on wearing your tutus! After all, what better way to embrace the wonder of ballet than with a twirl or two in your very own fabulous, feminine tutu. Let the twirling and fashion continue, darlings!
Until next time!
Your forever devoted pink-tutu wearing blogger, Emma
