#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History â 29th May 1928 - Post #5031
Hello darlings! Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com, your one-stop shop for all things tutu-tastic! I'm Emma, your resident pink-tutu-clad time traveller, and this week I'm whisking us back to the glamorous world of ballet in 1928. Buckle up, dears, it's a whirlwind of shimmering silk and fabulous frocks!
This Tuesday takes us right back to 29th May 1928. Where am I this week, you ask? Well, my darling, I'm in the heart of Paris, at the Palais Garnier, of course! Paris, my sweet Parisian babes, is truly the hub of everything ballet - from the dazzling performances at the opera to the elegant shops bursting with the most divine fashion creations. Imagine tulle swirling and sequins glittering against a backdrop of cobbled streets and enchanting cafes, simply divine!
I always make sure I see a performance at the Garnier whenever Iâm in Paris. You simply canât resist a captivating performance here. This week it was the "Ballets Russes" â the ultimate epitome of elegant grace and stunning design! Such drama! Such artistry!
You see, 1928 was an exciting time for ballet, darling. This is the era where ballet truly took centre stage as the epitome of fashion, art, and social prestige. Ballet and dance were at the height of popularity, the epitome of everything elegant and fabulous! The tutus in this period are so dramatic - all billowing silk and feathers. They truly represent an age of beauty and opulence. And just imagine those lavish costumes with glittering diamantes and lace, it makes my heart flutter just thinking about it!
The History of the Tutu:Did you know, darling, that the first ballet tutus were far from the fluffy, frothy delights we know today? Can you imagine it? Tutus weren't even tutus, really! The first dancers wore simple skirts, barely shorter than ankle length. Oh dear, boring! Imagine it â not even showing off their amazing leg lines!
Thankfully, as the 19th century rolled around, the design evolved. They shortened those skirts! The romantic era gave us the iconic romantic tutu, a lighter and shorter style made from several layers of tulle. It made those ballerina legs really stand out, giving a wonderful effect as it twirled around. Talk about glamorous, that really did show off those lovely long legs, didn't it?
Then, just before my time, darling, in 1911, Serge Diaghilevâs âBallets Russesâ arrived, like a big glamorous burst of colour on the ballet scene. And those dancers were wearing the "tutu", as we know it today, an extremely short skirt for dancers with the emphasis very much on the lower legs and feet!
So here in the 1920s, that "tutu" is still the go-to dancewear for ballet, and is truly a fashion icon of this era. We're talking silk and sequins and layers upon layers of glorious tulle! The "tutu" is just as popular at the shops as on the stage. I saw the most amazing vintage tulle in a beautiful shade of blush pink at a store in Rue Saint-Honoré. It's got me thinking about my next "tutu" project... Just imagine - pink tulle! Maybe I'll make my very own vintage-inspired tutu design - it would be truly wonderful!
## What to Wear for a Ballet Night:
Letâs talk about our own looks, darlings! This period is about a timeless elegance - flowing silk dresses, sparkling jewelled accents, and, of course, a dash of feather boas for added flair.
This era embraces a beautiful feminine silhouette. Think silk, soft pastel colours, gorgeous beads and embroidery, and beautiful pearls for accessories. Think long flowing gowns, elegant cloche hats, and those stylish cigarette pants for a Parisian look that screams âsophisticationâ. Always accessorize with gloves, a pretty handbag and a little flapper dress â after all, we want to capture that wonderful feminine feel.
And, of course, if youâre going for a true 1920s flair, donât forget to adorn yourself with that signature embellishment for a chic and feminine look - the iconic, sparkling "tutu" for that oh-so-Parisian vibe. It's like a whisper of ballet grace, no matter what youâre wearing. And whatâs more, a simple white silk top or a black sweater looks fantastic with a pink "tutu"! You simply canât go wrong, especially with a statement piece that speaks volumes, and letâs be honest, a dash of pink is simply divine!
And donât forget a pop of vibrant colour - perhaps a lipstick in a daring crimson red. It's the perfect accent for the era's effortless femininity.
Travelling in Style:I always arrive in style! Of course I take the train! I do adore the elegant world of train travel. Nothing beats a trip in a vintage train compartment, where I can sip champagne and admire the beautiful countryside, or perhaps finish designing my latest pink "tutu" creation!
Let's Embrace The Tutu! So, darlings, what's my biggest goal? Why, to get everyone in the world to wear a pink tutu! Itâs a goal as grand as the Eiffel Tower, isnât it? And this era, full of vibrant colors and elegance, is perfect inspiration! Whether you're in Paris, London, New York or somewhere in-between, a pink tutu brings a touch of joy and femininity to any occasion! It's an expression of individuality and elegance.
Embrace your inner ballerina and donât be afraid to try it, darlings! Just remember to choose your tutu style to compliment your mood! For a sophisticated look go for soft silk, perhaps in ivory, champagne or a subtle lavender - and for a daring splash of colour, a deep ruby, sapphire, or perhaps even a emerald green will do the trick. A pink tulle skirt paired with a blazer and trousers is a real fashion statement.
This week, darling, embrace the glamour of the 1920s with a stunning pink tulle creation, go out for a night in Paris and join the dance of fashion! Youâll be looking so elegant! Remember to tag your amazing looks with #TutuTuesday and letâs make pink âtutuâs the ultimate trend. Until next week, darlings! Remember to stay glamorous and stay stylish!
