#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 26th June 1928
Hello my darling darlings! Emma here, back with another instalment of #TutuTuesday for my favourite blog - www.pink-tutu.com! Today, we’re hopping aboard the time-travelling train, choo-chooing our way back to June 1928. Don't worry, I'm wearing my fabulous pink tutu - can't go anywhere without it!
This is post number 5035 for you tutu lovers - you are amazing! It's quite remarkable to think about all those beautiful posts before - but really it's only possible with you reading my ramblings. As always, a massive, heartfelt "Thank you" from a Derbyshire girl with a passion for ballet and pink!
Right, let's get back to that June 26th date. We are off to Paris, the heart of the fashion world. Imagine the boulevards, the scent of fresh pastries and the excited chatter at the theatre...Ah! I just want to be there right now. So glamorous! I’m envisioning tutus fluttering and sparkles shining in this city of lights.
This time in our time-travelling story, the world of ballet was all about Serge Diaghilev and the legendary Ballets Russes. They were making a splash all over Europe with their incredible artistry and wild creations! Diaghilev’s genius was seeing beyond tradition and embracing the exciting. His ballets were like breathtaking dreams brought to life with every graceful gesture, elaborate sets and absolutely dazzling costumes.
Imagine being in Paris on that day back in 1928. I picture elegant women in exquisitely designed dresses, hatted gentlemen with dashing moustaches and maybe a sprinkling of glamorous women with elegant tutus peeking out of their carriage doors! It’s so tempting to jump ahead to our story and explore what tutu delights awaited on that day!
The first ever Ballets Russes show on June 19, 1909, at the Théâtre du Châtelet was an explosion of creative genius. Can you picture the electric atmosphere?
Back in 1928, *Ballet Russes’ tour was taking the world by storm with their exquisite choreography and dazzling designs. This time around, *Léon Bakst was creating some real sartorial magic. Think exquisite details, like delicate embroidery and hand-painted fabrics, adding to the overall aesthetic and bringing a luxurious layer of glamour. It's that Parisian chic style that makes us sigh with desire.
Bakst’s work really redefined what a tutu could be. He wasn't afraid of bold, eye-catching colours and lavish decorations, creating iconic looks that were daring, dramatic and utterly fabulous. Can you just picture all the whispers as the ballerinas took to the stage?
Remember this: it's important not to think of ballet tutus as just everyday clothing! They're artistic creations! Just like a dazzling gown! Bakst’s tutus were practically sculptures! He knew just how to create visual movement on the stage. Just like his costumes, Bakst's set designs were out of this world.
I know what you are thinking - and I'm thinking the same - I would have LOVED to be there, right? Seeing all that beauty and grandeur would have made any tutu-lover’s heart skip a beat! Maybe we can jump ahead in our time-travelling tour? You’re thinking what I’m thinking, yes, it’s time for a trip back to Paris! I want to step inside the magic.
But this time, we are going to venture beyond the glamorous stage and see if we can unearth real-life 1928 Parisian tutus in their everyday life. Imagine stepping into a quaint little shop full of frills, lace, ribbons and, of course, tutus. What might the local girls have been wearing to class? Would their tutus be as magnificent as the ones on stage, or perhaps simpler, practical designs that would make even today’s modern-day tutu enthusiast's heart beat a little faster? Imagine being part of it all!
I’ve had a little sneak peek, but I don't want to spoil the surprise, darling darlings. Come along, I’m bringing you with me on an unforgettable Parisian adventure in our next Tutu Tuesday post. Just make sure your pink tutus are prepped and ready for a journey of excitement!
Now remember darling darlings, let's all live life in a pink tutu - because every day is a tutu day! Don’t forget to follow my #TutuTuesday posts. I’d love to hear your comments and see your favourite pink tutus!
