#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: 1929-10-22

Hello Darlings!

It’s Emma here, back with you for another exciting edition of #TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History! Today’s blog post is particularly special, my dears, because I've travelled right back to October 22nd, 1929, and oh my, what a time to be alive! This post is Number 5104 on my www.pink-tutu.com website, and if you've followed me this long, you know I adore diving into the glamorous history of our beloved tutu.

As a ballerina from Derbyshire, I get such a thrill seeing how our fabulous tutu has evolved, and honestly, 1929 was such a revolutionary year in the dance world! Imagine my joy finding myself amidst all the excitement of the ballet renaissance!

The Tutu of the Time

Oh, the 1920s! Those wild and wonderful years, the age of flapper dresses, bobbed hair, and a dash of scandal! But when it comes to ballet, the tutu scene was quite different. We are talking about long tutus, those graceful, swishing, flowing affairs, the tutu romantiques, darling! The tutus were soft, draped, made with silk and tulle. Think clouds, darling, they swirled with every twirl! The length wasn't for everyone, but it really emphasized the feminine, the grace, and, let's be honest, the stunning leg line!

You can't mention ballet tutus in 1929 without mentioning the Russian Ballet! Now, they were pushing boundaries with these amazing costumes. Just look at The Firebird and Scheherazade, with their fabulous tutus that would set the stage alight! I have the most glorious photograph of a ballerina in Scheherazade, the colours, the layering, it was so dramatic, like something straight out of a dream!

Travelling to a Tutu Filled Future

For this #TutuTuesday, I’m currently nestled in a comfortable carriage, travelling through France on the way to the Paris Opéra! There’s something wonderfully magical about train travel, the world rushes past your window, and the excitement builds, and oh, the excitement at seeing a performance is overwhelming. I’ve already got my eye on a darling hat and matching handbag for my next adventure!

On the way to the Opéra, I spotted the most charming pink and white silk confection, in the prettiest store on the Rue de la Paix. Darling, it's a vintage masterpiece! Think flowing lines, intricate detailing, and, of course, all in shades of pink. You can imagine, my lovely readers, the rush I felt, it's the kind of tutu dreams are made of. I couldn't resist. The shop owner gave me the most incredible discount, simply because he loved the energy of my pink tutu! I must share a picture of it with you all on my next post!

* Ballet & Fashion, Oh La La!*

The fashion scene is just as inspiring, darling. I've got my eye on some glorious satin gowns, so sleek and flowing. My vision of beauty? Long tutus with shimmering fabrics. Imagine those delicate details, dancing with every turn. Honestly, I am starting to think we could have a new tutu trend going on.

Speaking of inspiration, on October 22, 1929, a fashion exhibition was unveiled at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Fashion, as you can imagine, is a big part of the ballet scene! They were showcasing how clothes reflected the changing world and you know what? That reminds me of tutus too! Each year they’ve become more dramatic, more creative!

What is Happening Today

So, what’s going on today in this magical 1929, on 22nd October? It’s a date filled with excitement.

  1. First and foremost, there is *“La Traviata" at the *Opéra de Paris. * You’ll see dancers wearing *tutus romantiques, and it's going to be absolutely stunning. The story, the music, the emotion! I cannot wait. I am particularly fond of how dancers move in these styles of tutus. Every movement is almost poetic.

    1. Back in New York, they are still showcasing fashion at the Museum of Modern Art as a form of art, and, it makes me want to wear every gorgeous outfit and every fantastic tutu that exists! Oh darling, this era just oozes style! I wish I could dress them up in every pink, darling!

      1. And last but not least, the world will celebrate National Chocolate Day. Chocolate! Why don’t we have that in my time? * Oh, my goodness* it sounds just divine! * I do love all the beautiful, feminine shades of pink that are inspired by chocolate!* The delicate blush tones! The deep, warm brown shades!

The excitement is palpable, darling. It's going to be an unforgettable day of ballet, fashion, and chocolate!

Oh! and One Last Thing:
