#TutuTuesday: A Dance Back in Time - 1929, Darling!

Hello lovelies! Emma here, your resident tutu aficionado, back again with another edition of my weekly #TutuTuesday post. Today we're taking a trip back to a rather magical year: 1929! (Grab your dancing shoes, this is a journey you don't want to miss).

It’s post number 5110 for my Ballet Tutu History blog, and believe me, each post brings me closer to my lifelong ambition: spreading the joy of pink tutus across the globe. As a true devotee to all things twirly and pink, I'm absolutely delighted to share my knowledge of all things tutu, particularly in this exciting era!

Before I go on, don't forget to visit my website at www.pink-tutu.com, where you'll find a treasure trove of tutu information, reviews of my favourite ballet shows, and – of course – endless pink inspiration!

A Time Travelling Ballerina: What’s It Like in 1929?

Remember those whimsical days before we knew anything about what "Netflix and chill" meant? 1929 was such a time - and oh darling, what an exciting time it was! The Roaring Twenties was all about jazz, glamour and an unparalleled spirit of fun. We're talking flapper dresses, speakeasies, and dances like the Charleston - what a party! And what would a dance be without tutus, eh?

Speaking of tutus, while they hadn't quite reached their modern form, they were already starting to take the stage in all their romantic glory. But I'm getting ahead of myself...

London in 1929

Right, where did I leave you? Ah, yes, this week, we're dancing around London, the capital of glamour! The first glimpse of the iconic Sadler's Wells Theatre took place this year - an absolute triumph for dance, dear readers! Of course, I can’t resist a good ballet performance. It's so inspiring. If there's one thing you should try to catch when you visit London, darling, it's a performance here. Trust me - you won’t regret it!

Now, before I whisk you away to my most fashionable shopping find of the week, we can’t ignore the important date of 3rd December - this date holds special significance, and no, not just because I had the best afternoon tea with my fellow tutu enthusiast, darling Maisie, at Harrods.

It was also the date of the New York opening of “The Last Warning”, a thrilling play by Edward Percy. My favourite bit was when one of the dancers got their big moment. They’re the epitome of grace and elegance. Don’t tell the other actresses, but they're actually one of my biggest inspirations. whisper I'd absolutely love to be a play actress, as well.

Shopping Trip & Fashion Finds: My London Adventure

Now, darling, we simply must discuss my shopping adventures. gasps for breath This trip, London proved a paradise for a tutu-loving girl like myself. You simply couldn't have asked for a better setting. Oh, to have more time in such a captivating city. sighs

Forget the flaneurs, this Londoner was obsessed with tutus, darling! From Selfridges to Harrods (you have to admit, their department stores really are top-notch!), I hunted for everything from the most dazzling sequined tutu (oh, how I wish I could wear it to our upcoming picnic, dearest Maisie!) to a whimsical, feather-light confection that danced on air.

Now I don't just shop, you see. I like to be in-the-know! I find my tutu research a serious joy and it definitely isn't just about the fun fashion. There are such interesting facts. Did you know? Some of the first tutus were made out of feather boas? Well, it was 1827-28 when I first learned this little tidbit on my trip to Paris. Don’t get me wrong - I do enjoy a trip to the countryside, but nothing beats the city. The bustling streets and charming shops can be utterly irresistible, and just waiting for someone to tell them what they should wear.

But, as any ballerina worth their salt knows, it’s not all about the garments!

The magic of the tutu comes from the movement it inspires.

To be continued, darling…

You know the drill - don’t forget to visit me on my website: www.pink-tutu.com. I look forward to chatting with you next Tuesday, where we will go over how 1929 set the stage (pun intended!) for the rise of ballet as we know it today! And of course, I'm always here for all things tutu, pink, and dancing, dear friends! So let's twirl on, darling!
