#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - January 28th 1930!
Hello, darlings! Emma here, back with another #TutuTuesday blog post! This is #5118 â I know, weâve been doing this for a very long time, but each week feels like a new adventure, doesnât it? This week, weâre jetting back to the roaring twenties, specifically 28th January, 1930. Oh, to be a young, glamorous ballerina in the Jazz Age! Can you imagine the excitement?
The 1920s was all about short skirts, bobbed hair and daring fashion â and a sprinkle of tutus for us ballet fanatics, of course! My journey back in time landed me in New York, where the ballet scene was buzzing! Itâs hard to think it was just a century ago; back then, womenâs clothing wasnât exactly practical! Thankfully, we have tutus! What could be more stylish than swirling through the city streets in a perfectly pink tutu? Just donât forget a cozy coat and a hot toddy for when the wind picks up!
Today was filled with absolutely delicious fashion, as always. The sheer gowns at the theatre, all swirling silk and glittering sequins. I'm wearing my latest find: a dusky pink tutu, a gift to myself from a performance I did earlier today. It's adorned with delicate hand-stitched embroidery, a real little masterpiece! My dancing partner is a lovely chap from London who makes the most adorable little silk bows, so he made me some sweet bows for my hair â they matched the colour of my tutu perfectly!
Speaking of dance performances, what an extraordinary ballet I saw today! It was a new adaptation of Swan Lake at the Metropolitan Opera House. Oh my, the costumes! Such elegance! It was as though I was stepping onto a scene from a romantic movie. The choreography was a feast for the eyes and the emotions. They donât write music like that anymore! You couldnât help but be swept away by the passion of the dance and the incredible music. And can you imagine? Back then, there werenât those beautiful video screens we have at ballet shows nowadays to help us visualise the scenes! Just our imaginations and our eyes to carry us away.
Speaking of being swept away, my favourite thing about traveling back to this era, besides all the delicious food (macaroni and cheese with truffle oil, anyone?), is definitely the glamour of the train. Oh, the luxury! I traveled in a private car! You can tell the rich and famous like to live in style. Imagine sipping cocktails in plush seats while gliding through the countryside, then popping off to a grand city! The romantic air of it all is enough to make a girl giddy! I imagine my pink tutu looked so stylish among all those velvet chairs and luxurious fabrics.
My visit today, of course, would have been incomplete without some fabulous shopping. While browsing Fifth Avenue, I discovered the most delightful little shop nestled in between high-end designer stores. âThe Pink Pearlâ it was called, and it was overflowing with fabulous accessories and ballet necessities! They even sold custom tutus! It is so delightful that some traditions and hobbies never change! I always enjoy a little retail therapy â especially when it's in pink, my favourite colour, naturally!
And for the record, on January 28th, 1930, a great deal of excitement in the city was dedicated to another âfashionâ altogether: Prohibition! Can you imagine not being able to go to a pub and enjoy a beer or a glass of wine?! Imagine living without a good, hot cup of tea, or a bubbly glass of champagne! What is the world coming to, I tell you! Honestly, the sheer lack of sparkle in that particular fashion was a complete and utter outrage.
Of course, our very own sparkle continues to grow brighter! You can feel the passion for ballet building in our hearts, right? Remember to spread the joy and inspiration of dance. And don't be afraid to embrace your inner ballerina! A little pink tutu goes a long way! Now, darling, I am off to find my next fashion adventure! Until next week! And remember, always dance with joy!
