Tutu Tuesday: A Blast From the Past! (Post #5135)
Hello, darlings! It's your favourite tutu-obsessed blogger, Emma, back with another edition of #TutuTuesday! Today we're going to travel back in time, all the way to the 27th of May, 1930. Can you imagine, my loves? The year when the Great Depression was still casting its long shadow over the world? What were ballet tutus like then? What was everyone wearing? Let's hop on the time-traveling express train and find out!
Oh, before I forget, don't miss my dazzling pink tutu at the end of this post, inspired by today's historical gem! You know I can't resist a bit of retro glamour!
Paris, My Love! Our time-traveling journey takes us to Paris, the beating heart of dance and fashion, of course. In 1930, ballet tutus were very different from the flowing, romantic designs we adore today. Think, my lovelies, of stiff, shorter skirts made from stiff materials. Imagine less billowing, less floating, more precision! Ballet tutus at the time, you see, were meant to emphasise lines, control, and sharp movements, rather than the fluid, ethereal beauty of today's styles.
Imagine being in a theatre, sitting amongst the stylish Parisians, watching a ballet like "The Sleeping Beauty" by Tchaikovsky. It was a massive hit! Even back then, darling! And yes, even the most renowned ballet dancers, like Anna Pavlova, the "Queen of Dance," were dancing in these shorter, stiff tutus. Can you believe it?
Fashion FavouritesBut enough about tutus! The fashion world in 1930 was positively popping with incredible styles! Parisian women embraced the “garçonne" look - sleek and sophisticated, like a beautiful, fashionable boy! You might see them sporting tailored pantsuits, little black dresses with delicate beading, or silk scarves tied around their necks. So much elegance, even without a tutu!
There was a vibrant, creative spirit in the air, with vibrant colours like deep reds, greens, blues, and yellows finding their way onto dresses and hats. And don't forget those daring, bold prints! Geometric shapes, bold florals - absolutely chic, darling! They even made a splash on the dance floors! Can you picture it? A dance hall full of dazzling colours and energetic dance steps!
A Dream in Pink!Speaking of colours, let's get back to tutus. As much as I adore this short, sharp, stylish tutu era, I'm dreaming of a soft, flowy, and completely pink ballet tutu inspired by these times.
Imagine this, lovelies! A ballet tutu crafted from beautiful layers of blush-coloured tulle. Soft, wispy, and airy! The fabric would be adorned with delicate embellishments - perhaps sparkling beads in a matching shade or a row of hand-stitched flowers in the same shade, but maybe just a touch brighter. For an extra bit of elegance, I’d tie a grosgrain ribbon in a subtle, dusky rose colour around the waist, to match the flowers and beads, of course.
It would look so perfect on stage under the spotlights, floating and swirling as I danced. Pure Parisian elegance! But, I want everyone to wear a pink tutu! And wouldn't this tutu be perfect for an afternoon stroll in a sunny Paris garden? Just imagine the picture!
I hope you loved this #TutuTuesday trip through time! Let me know if you want to journey to another era. What else are you curious about, darling?
As always, thank you for being here with me!
Love,
Emma xx
