Tutu Tuesday #5195: A Little History for a Hot Summer's Day!

Hello, darlings! Emma here, your resident Tutu Queen, ready to whisk you back in time to another glorious era in tutu history. Today we're taking a trip toā€¦ drumrollā€¦ 1931! Buckle up your sparkly pointe shoes and hold on tight!

You'll never believe the incredible weather we've been having in Derbyshire. A perfect blue sky, the sun just basking down ā€“ makes me think of summer holidays on the Riviera, doesnā€™t it? And this wonderful sunshine makes me feel utterly delighted to be travelling in my gorgeous new pink tutu. It really makes me stand out amongst the crowds here, although London has much more colour than the old coal mining towns like Chesterfield. Imagine: all those smoky skies, miners in their grimy working clothes... just makes the pink even brighter. But the lovely weather means we can really see the sunshine reflect on those delicate fabrics and really brings the tutus to life, don't you think?

So, where were we? Oh yes! 1931ā€¦ the world of tutus, naturally.

Back then, tutus were a world away from the modern style, and thatā€™s exciting, isnā€™t it? Imagine, even the grandest tutus of the time were made for less than the price of a good afternoon tea now!

Letā€™s Talk Tulle: In 1931, tutus werenā€™t the fluffy, frilly affairs they are now. Instead, they were a symphony of layered silk and a dash of net for good measure. Think, ā€œprincessā€, but less ā€œBelleā€, more ā€œElsa" (without the frozen part). This period was still steeped in classic styles, you know, ballet was all about precise movements and elegance. They say "The Rite of Spring", a ballet with really powerful dance and music came in 1913 and took the world of ballet by storm.

Tutus For Every Occasion! Now, my lovely readers, remember I love to share how tutu fashion transcends even just ballet ā€“ and 1931 had some exciting tutu inspiration going on. Picture this ā€“ women donned graceful and flowing gowns with layers of tulle for social events! Can you imagine the fluttering of the fabric as they swept into the grand ballroom, perhaps after a thrilling night at the opera or a dinner party? Weā€™re talking sophistication, darling!

Speaking of grand nights, did you know that today in 1931, "The King's Singer", an amazing English baritone singer, was singing a live show on BBC Radio for all to hear! You know I adore radio ā€“ nothing beats sitting by the crackling wireless with a cup of tea in one hand and a magazine full of elegant tutus in the other. And as the opera star sang those fabulous tunes, wouldnā€™t you agree a sparkly tutu or two would have brought just the right amount of glitz to the scene?

Inspiration From a Bygone Era! I know my dear readerā€™s love to think of ways to add tutu style into our everyday looks! So letā€™s explore some 1931 inspiration. Donā€™t just think full tutus! A delicate tulle scarf? It adds instant Parisian elegance to any outfit! Or consider the layers: the 1931 ballet dancer might have layered several chiffon skirts over one another. Now picture a layered skirt on your favourite jeans for a casual daytime look! You can create a beautiful whimsical flair simply by pairing chiffon or net fabric to anything you already own!

*Oh, and don't forget those fantastic little "en pointe" shoes. A pair of ballet pumps just for the weekend? Perfection, I say! *

It's incredible, really, how those delicate, swirling movements in those elegant dances have been influencing the fashion world for over a hundred years, isn't it?

Iā€™ll be back next week for another exciting installment of Tutu Tuesday! Now, let's grab some cream cakes and sip on that tea ā€“ and dream about elegant tutus and summer fashion, because I sure will!

And remember, darling ā€“ the world needs a little bit of pink tulle magic!

Your Tutu Queen,

Emma
