Tutu Tuesday #5212: A Peek Into Ballet's Past! (17th November 1931)
Hello darlings! It's Emma here, your pink-tutu-clad time traveller, ready to whisk you away on a fabulous journey through the history of the most delightful garment known to humankind – the tutu!
As always, I’m so excited to share with you all the wonder of tutus. For those who are new, every Tuesday, I travel through time, looking for the most inspiring stories about tutus, their history, their designers, and their stars. So put on your fanciest frocks, grab a cup of tea, and settle in – it’s going to be a truly glamorous trip!
Today, my lovelies, we’re going all the way back to 17th November, 1931! Can you believe it? The world was a very different place then, and the fashion was oh-so-divine! This day happened to be very special, and very relevant to my passion for the beautiful, because in London, the Sadler’s Wells Ballet premiered a masterpiece by Frederick Ashton. Oh, it was called “A Wedding Bouquet.” Imagine! It’s practically bursting with elegance!
Now, let's rewind a little, because before we talk about "A Wedding Bouquet" let's look at fashion trends and tutus at that time, shall we?
1931: The Twenties in a Twist!
We're all about embracing a touch of the twenties here at Pink Tutu! The Roaring Twenties, full of glamour, music, and dance! We've always had a bit of an obsession with this decade, so I was just giddy to hop back to this era, especially as 1931 still had echoes of the flamboyant fashion and flair from the roaring twenties. Now, tutus were in their element. Long gone were the days of the heavier, frillier styles. The new era embraced streamlined shapes, bold colours, and a sense of modern femininity. And this is precisely what we saw with the tutu, especially in ballet performances like the ones choreographed by Ashton!
Fashion and the Stage!
Speaking of ballet, what was everyone wearing on stage? 1931 was truly a tutu era! I've just come back from the most fantastic ballet show in London, and you'd be utterly stunned at the tutus they were wearing! The tutus in Ashton's "A Wedding Bouquet" were absolutely to die for. They had this elegant, soft flow that highlighted the grace of the dancers' movements. And don’t get me started on the colours – pinks, peaches, yellows – all so feminine and whimsical! Think of all those beautifully shimmering colours dancing under the theatre spotlights! It’s the most romantic thing, truly!
Now, you wouldn't catch me dead wearing anything but a pink tutu. But honestly, my darlings, these ballet costumes, they’re like art, don't you think? You see how those colours move and shimmer, the light catches them in just the right way! The effect is magical, simply magical!
Beyond Ballet:
I even popped by some of the chicest stores in London. Did you know, 1931 fashion was obsessed with silk, sequins, and lace? Absolutely fabulous! There’s no wonder they call the thirties “the era of glamour”! Oh, and let’s not forget feathers. Every hat, every frock - absolutely divine!
Now, if I could, I’d make every woman in the world wear a pink tutu, wouldn’t you? That would make the world a whole lot more colourful! Imagine all the fun of twirling around in a gorgeous pink tutu. Isn't that what we all crave, that little sprinkle of magic, of beauty and grace? It's a feeling of liberation, like being able to dance with the wind, carefree and happy!
Well, darlings, until next time, remember, you’re all absolutely lovely, you deserve to embrace the magic! Embrace your inner ballerina! Wear a tutu, go to a ballet show, spin, dance, twirl! Do everything with flair, like I do. Now go and make the world a more fabulous place, and let me know in the comments below if you’re already wearing your pink tutu today!
See you next Tuesday!
