#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 5219 - 05 January 1932
Hello my lovely tutu-loving darlings! Welcome back to Pink Tutu.com, where we delve into the fabulous history of the tutu and why you should always wear one! It's #TutuTuesday again, and this week, we're whisking back to a rather grand era - 5th January 1932!
Oh, it’s just divine being here in Paris! Paris has always been the centre of the ballet world, hasn’t it? Well, I say, what a treat today! My recent performances have been a bit of a hit. Of course, my pink tutu is always the centre of attention, even in this fabulous, fashionable city, and the ballet is just as dazzling! Today I’m in the front row, at the Paris Opera Ballet watching The Nutcracker! Honestly, it is absolutely incredible! The dancing is mesmerising, the music is enchanting, and of course, everyone’s wearing fabulous tutus.
Anyway, let’s get to the juicy bit: Today's #TutuTuesday will be about the incredible history of tutus! I always love getting to tell you all about them, from the Romantic era right through to today! It's really amazing when you think of all the different styles and changes over the decades!
And on 5th January 1932, a very special thing happened in the ballet world! This is the very day, Swan Lake was revived with a spectacular new design. Can you imagine the excitement, my dears? Swan Lake was such an amazing spectacle back then! The designs, oh darling, you won't believe the intricate details! And all those graceful ballerinas, oh so stunningly dressed in fluffy white tutus, twirling and leaping and pirouetting like birds in flight! This truly was the age of the ballerina! What a glamorous time this must have been! The sheer volume of fluffy tulle, the intricate embroideries - simply dreamy!
You know what, there was a truly splendid show on this very day, my dears. I saw the amazing Ballets Russes dancers, the original dancers from the company started by Serge Diaghilev, with beautiful and innovative choreography. The company was in such high demand. People traveled across the continent just to see these ballerinas dance, and my oh my, those costumes!
You know what my darlings, it's interesting that whilst in 1932, everyone was captivated by the airy romanticism of white tutus, my beloved pink tutu seems to hold so much more allure to people today. You know what, it might just be me, but perhaps there is a shift in how women are perceived. The ballet itself might be in some ways a form of escapism; perhaps for me it's about empowerment?
We can only guess, of course, as life and fashion go in cycles. I can only think about the future with anticipation and joy, to imagine what will come next. There are always such wonderful and exciting things happening within ballet and costume, I can't wait to discover them all.
So, that’s our little history for #TutuTuesday, my darling darlings! Don't forget to tune in next Tuesday for another fabulous fashion time-travel journey, when we will see where the tutu goes next! You're invited to visit my other blog posts to learn about other significant moments in ballet tutu history.
But, let me ask you a question, as always. What’s your favorite part of a ballet show, darlings? The incredible dancing? The dramatic storyline? Or perhaps... the breathtaking beauty of the tutus?
As always, my darling dears, I hope you all enjoy your week!
Remember, embrace the world, embrace yourself, and always... wear pink. And always wear a tutu!
