#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Whirl Through Time!

Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com, my darlings! It’s me, Emma, your ever-so-pink, tutu-clad guide to all things fabulous and frilly. Today, we’re going on a little time travel adventure, all in the name of ballet! This is #TutuTuesday blog post number 5231 and it's going to be a real treat!

Fast forward to March 29th, 1932. Oh, the glamour! The excitement! Can you imagine? This was the era of elegant flapper dresses and glamorous socialites, and of course, ballet was no different.

It was just a hop, skip and a jump in the TARDIS, which I might add, needs a little revamp, perhaps a touch of pink satin lining. I’m a big fan of matching the interior decor with your exterior. Imagine if the TARDIS were covered in my favourite hot pink tutu? Oh, it'd be sensational! Anyway, back to 1932!

The world of ballet was bursting with talented dancers like the incomparable Alicia Markova and the charismatic Anton Dolin. Imagine, I’d be in the audience watching them take to the stage in all their dazzling glory. Their movement was elegant, graceful and precise, and their costumes... just utterly captivating!

Speaking of costumes... This was the era of the 'classic' ballet tutu! That gloriously billowing tulle skirt that made ballerinas look like delicate fairies, or majestic swans, or fiery nymphs, just bursting with magic and movement! And, of course, the tutu had a special significance for a young dancer like me! Think about it... this was the time when the ballet world embraced the tutu with all its frilly magnificence!

Just a thought... imagine if this blog post was written by a young, hopeful ballet dancer in 1932. Imagine all the emotions swirling in their mind, the hope, the ambition, the sheer joy of swirling in a beautiful pink tutu! I can feel the thrill just thinking about it!

Let's dive deeper into this exciting time! What exactly was happening on the 29th of March 1932, apart from the magical ballet world of course?

Well, on this very day, in the heart of New York City, a stunning Broadway show named "The House of Connelly" opened at the Empire Theatre! Now, my dears, you can imagine the sheer brilliance and opulence that a Broadway production would offer in those days! With a story as rich and captivating as the costume designs, this must have been a spectacular show.

And that, my lovely tutu enthusiasts, brings me to another wonderful thing about 1932 – fashion was all about embellishments! Just like a perfectly sculpted tutu! The more sparkly beads, feathers and sequins, the better. That era simply adored extravagance and all things shiny, sparkly, and delightful. The fashion was flamboyant, full of personality and oh-so-feminine. You could tell a whole story through clothes! How fantastic is that?

Imagine, the stage would be alive with dancing stars wearing gorgeous costumes that wouldn’t look out of place in a fashion show today! That, my lovelies, is the beauty of fashion and the lasting impact it has on our lives. It transcends time. We learn from the past, and it always informs the present. And who knows what inspiration 1932 had for the tutu's future?

While I was in the year 1932, I noticed a particular trend emerging that I felt needed my full, pink-tutu-clad attention - the rise of “ballet street”! Imagine... people watching street performers, experiencing the grace of ballet on every corner! It wasn't just on the grand stages! It was bursting onto the streets, and the world was taking notice.

It was all the rage! People on the streets loved ballet street, which reminded me of my love of traveling by train. One of the absolute highlights of travelling by train in the UK is the chance to catch street performers at the stations! From buskers with accordions and violins to performers with beautiful handmade puppets, there is a charming touch of theatrical beauty and life at our train stations! And of course, my beloved ballet performances, that I use to fund my amazing trips through time.

In my little, pink tutu-loving world, I can already envision ballet street being embraced on a much wider scale. I’m thinking: tutus in every colour, elaborate backdrops on the high streets, a whole new world of dazzling entertainment!

My mind's racing with ideas. This time travelling is inspiring!

So, my dear readers, that’s it for #TutuTuesday this week. But remember, you can catch me on my next adventure. Until then, spread the love of ballet, spread the love of tutus, and keep dancing in your pink tutus!

Now go forth and twirl!

XOXO, Emma
