Tutu Tuesday: #5254 - Back to the Roaring Twenties!
Hey everyone! Emma here, your pink-tutu-loving time-travelling ballerina, back with another Tutu Tuesday blog post, and today we're going back in time - to a very exciting era!
Back in 1932...
The year is 1932, the world is dancing! Weâre still smack bang in the middle of the Roaring Twenties, jazz is the soundtrack to life, and everyone is smitten with the beauty of ballet. Can you imagine? The world was simply mesmerised by this graceful, beautiful art form.
Today, letâs take a twirl back to a time when the art of ballet held a special place in peopleâs hearts. I've travelled to Paris, the city that's known for its beautiful ballets and stunning dancers. It's simply buzzing with excitement. The energy in this place is infectious!
It's a Tuesday morning, and the streets are bustling with Parisian life. Stylish women are whizzing past in chic flapper dresses and smart, fashionable suits. But today, weâre not focusing on their stylish attire (though they are truly divine!), we're going to talk about ballet.
This is the year, the very year, when the legendary Diaghilev Ballets Russes brought a new wave of ballets to the Parisian stage. Can you imagine being present at one of these shows? Oh, it would have been pure magic!
I'm standing just outside the famous ThĂ©Ăątre des Champs-ĂlysĂ©es, looking up at the grand façade with its elaborate decoration. Can you picture this, the theatre gleaming in the Parisian sunshine, its beautiful façade and delicate carvings telling a story of the grand artistic moments it has housed.
I'm holding my ticket, and I canât wait to enter this historic place, to take my place in the theatre's magnificent red plush seats and watch a dazzling ballet. The excitement is bubbling up inside me just imagining it all, seeing the gorgeous tutus fluttering across the stage, the music flowing like a stream, the ballerinas making graceful movements, like magical creatures.
Speaking of tutus, these ballets werenât exactly bursting with frilly, elaborate ones as you see in classical ballets today, they were a little more on the simpler side. Just picture a wispy skirt of tulle - perhaps a hint of sparkle or a dash of color, with the dancer's beautiful, toned legs shining through!
Can you imagine, seeing the elegant silhouette of the dancers moving to the powerful music, all dressed in beautiful tulle and dancing the night away? I can see their movement in my mindâs eye, swirling with such power and grace.
In fact, on the 6th of September 1932, I have an amazing treat planned. Itâs my very lucky day! It's the day the Ballets Russes are presenting Stravinskyâs "Apollo." The stage will be abuzz with talented dancers in their chic costumes, a dance piece full of intriguing patterns, classical forms, a celebration of a new wave of ballet! This performance will leave me speechless. I'm so excited, my heartâs practically bursting out of my tutu!
Thereâs so much beauty to soak in! I love learning about ballet in all its many shapes and forms, itâs amazing how itâs evolved. Each generation had its own style, its own interpretation of movement, but all bound by the same elegant spirit. And the fact that these artistic gems survive in the history of the dance world, ready to inspire generations of dancers to come is wonderful!
The magic of ballet can be felt in every corner of this incredible world! Don't you agree?
The streets are humming, full of people from all walks of life heading in every direction. I can smell the freshly baked bread and pastry in the air - pure Parisian heaven!
The music coming from the nearby cafés creates a joyous sound, it's like everyone is dancing to an invisible symphony.
Speaking of dancing, I'm heading off to the Theatre, it's time to enjoy my âApolloâ experience.
And, to my lovely Tutu-loving readers, donât forget, tomorrow, it's your chance to feel like a true ballerina, whether in the ballet studio, on the streets, at a party, or simply at home! Why not pop on a pink tutu, twirl and show your love for ballet!
Catch you next week!
