#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: November 22nd, 1932 - A Glittering Era for Dance!
Welcome, darlings, to #TutuTuesday, blog post number 5265 on www.pink-tutu.com! Today, I’m travelling through time again, back to the fabulous 1930s - oh, what an exciting era for dance! This is where my pink tutu dreams truly started coming alive. And the most wonderful thing? The dance world embraced the full-length tutu.
The 1930s were all about glamour, a kind of elegant razzle dazzle that shone in both fashion and the arts. Think Marlene Dietrich, long flowing gowns, and an effortless Parisian chic! This was also the decade of The Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, founded in 1931 by Russian impresario, Colonel de Basil. This company was a real game changer in the dance world. Their performances were filled with extraordinary artistry and flamboyant costumes, and the dancers truly stole the show!
My oh my, let’s chat about those costumes, darlings! They brought the full-length tutu centre stage – no longer a mere whisper in the ballet world! Imagine vast layers of tulle flowing and shimmering with every step, each dancer a glorious explosion of graceful colour, like a dream spun from gossamer silk. Now, this was the tutu I could get behind. Think elegant, airy, a true dance masterpiece!
And on this date in history, November 22nd 1932, in Paris, The Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo presented The Rite of Spring. Oh, it must have been absolutely spellbinding! The Rite of Spring, you see, is known for its bold and striking choreography and dramatic costumes. The performance is believed to have changed ballet history by shattering the established artistic forms.
Just picture those grand costumes – like living tapestries in movement! Think lavish patterns, bold colours, each dance telling a story as vibrantly as the dress on a ballerina's body. That, darling, was my kind of spectacle! Every costume became a statement of expression, adding a new layer of magic to the dance.
My little heart yearned for more. And I think that's why it was the 1930s that truly lit my tutu fire! It's why, to this very day, I cherish those long flowing layers and those fabulous theatrical spectacles. Imagine! Each twirl a statement, every pose a work of art.
Now, you've got to understand, I love travelling by train! There’s nothing better than sitting by the window, admiring the scenery while indulging in the latest fashion magazines (pink tutus featured heavily, naturally!), or even sketching some dresses I might wear at the next performance I attend. And it’s all thanks to those performances. It’s amazing what can be achieved with passion and an impressive collection of tutus, wouldn't you say?
Speaking of which… imagine being part of that world! Paris in the 1930s – a true mecca for dance and style! Just thinking about it gets my creative juices flowing. The shops were buzzing, the salons bustling with stylish people. Imagine the stunning costumes! The theatrical colours! It's all so inspiring, even now! Every vintage boutique and ballet store in my hometown holds a piece of this magical era, a glimmer of those shimmering times when dancing wasn’t just a dance, it was an artistic revolution!
So, darling, where's your favourite place to wear a pink tutu? Tell me in the comments! And let’s remember to wear our pink tutus proudly and embrace our inner ballerina spirit! See you next #TutuTuesday!
