Tutu Tuesday: #5280 – A Trip Back to the 1930s, With a Sprinkle of Pink!
Hello darling dears! It's your favourite pink-loving tutu aficionado, Emma, here, and welcome back to another edition of #TutuTuesday! Today we're embarking on a whimsical journey back to 1933. Get your vintage vibes ready, because this week we're delving into a time when tutus were really taking centre stage.
Now, picture this: the world's still recovering from the Great Depression, but in the ballet world, a new era of creativity is flourishing. We're in Paris, darling, the epicentre of all things fabulous, and even though times are a little uncertain, the beauty and magic of ballet still manages to bring a sprinkle of joy and elegance to every performance.
Speaking of elegance, darling, can you believe this magnificent dress I snagged in the vintage markets of Paris? Just picture a soft, flowing skirt made of a cloud of shimmering pink silk. Yes, darling, pink silk. And a bodice, with beautiful, intricate detailing around the neckline – just whispering the Art Deco vibes that were so prevalent in the 30s! Now, imagine the gorgeous rose-coloured ribbon swirling and twisting, tied with a sassy bow just below my knee. Talk about adding that extra je ne sais quoi to a classic Parisian afternoon!
But back to the tutus. In 1933, they were really starting to blossom in their own right. And this wasn't just happening on the stage! Designers were incorporating tutu-like designs into everyday fashion. It's a delightful little twist – who wouldn't want a bit of that ethereal ballerina flair in their wardrobe?
The Ballets Russes: Where History Meets Magic
Of course, we can't talk about ballet in the 1930s without giving a nod to the legendary Ballets Russes, darling! Think Serge Diaghilev and a world of exquisite artistry, groundbreaking choreography, and those stunning, unforgettable costumes. Imagine it – dancers gracefully pirouette in voluminous, swirling tulle tutus, sparkling under the theatre's spotlight.
This particular day, March 7th, 1933, there wasn't a ballet performance I could get to, but it didn't stop me from immersing myself in the energy and the charm of the time. A charming cafe filled with laughter and the delicate tinkling of piano music proved the perfect spot to soak in the vibrant energy of this magnificent city. As I enjoyed a lovely cup of thé and gâteau while observing the locals, I could practically feel the echoes of all those talented ballet dancers from the past and present in this magical city.
And honestly, darlings, a vintage cafe with charming Parisian ladies in beautifully-tailored hats is practically a ballet in itself! Especially when you factor in the lovely chansons the waiter is playing. He had me doing a quick, discreet twirl in my seat to the tempo of "La Vie en Rose"! Just imagine!
Shopping 'Till We Drop... In 1930s Fashion
I may have skipped the ballet performance, but, darling, how could I possibly miss out on a little retail therapy in a time like this? Just picturing myself, twirling down the Champs-Élysées in a flowing, billowing silk skirt and an oversized cloche hat! I even grabbed some beautiful handmade tulle and ribbon to experiment with my own tutu creations. The possibilities are endless, darlings!
From the Stage to the Streets
Did you know that tutus were making their way from the stage onto the streets in the 30s? They weren't as prominent as they are today, darling, but their whimsical essence was definitely making waves!
Think fashion icons like Marlene Dietrich and Jean Harlow - those ladies knew how to rock a bold look. They even wore long skirts with full, gathered shapes, creating a graceful, slightly tutu-esque vibe.
As I strolled along the Seine River, admiring the so chic fashion trends, I couldn't help but imagine a world where everyone embraced the allure of tutus – where the ordinary becomes extraordinary with the flick of a ballerina's skirt!
Tutu Dreams
Oh, to wear a tutu all day, every day! The idea is definitely becoming a thing, even if it's in stages, with small bits of inspiration and flair – whether it's a pink-hued petticoat peaking from beneath a midi-skirt or the adorable ballerina pumps gracing my feet as I walk down a sunny street!
To wear a tutu is to wear joy and beauty. It's an outward expression of grace, creativity, and imagination, a perfect antidote to a grey world. So, darlings, never forget – with a touch of pink and a swish of tulle, you can always bring a touch of magic to your everyday life.
Now, I must jet off, as a new fashion inspiration beckons, promising adventure and maybe a few gorgeous new finds to add to my vintage tutu collection! Stay tuned for more exciting #TutuTuesday adventures and until then, darlings, remember, every day can be a little bit magical – if you just put your heart in it, and of course, a sprinkle of pink!
Much love and tutu kisses, Emma xx
