#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History: July 18th, 1933 ā A Sparkling Debut for The Three Cornered Hat!
Hiya darlings! Emma here, your time-traveling tutu enthusiast, bringing you another fab instalment of #TutuTuesday, your weekly dose of ballet history, straight from the heart of the era! Today, weāre zipping back to 1933, and guess what? Itās almost time for a performance that had audiences absolutely smittenā¦
Now, darling, let me just say that when you think of iconic ballet outfits, there's a good chance your mind races to those bright pink, frilly tutus ā the ones that twirl like dreams. But, back in 1933, the dance scene was bursting with all kinds of styles, from the classically romantic (think tutus and pointe shoes!) to the modern and daring, and everything in between! I just love the variety!
And you know whatās particularly exciting about the year 1933? It's when a piece called The Three Cornered Hat really started stealing the show! Itās a stunning ballet set in Spain, a fiery love story that simply sets the stage alight. The music, oh darling, is divine, composed by the magnificent Manuel de Falla! Itās one of those scores you just can't stop moving to! The costumes in The Three Cornered Hat *were pure fashion magic - so stylish! Imagine flamenco dresses, intricate details, bright colours, andā¦ drumroll pleaseā¦ *sparkling tutus! The ones in this piece were definitely a touch more āground-breakingā than your standard pink confection, but equally gorgeous! Imagine dazzling tulle, embroidered with shimmering gold and silver thread - truly a breathtaking sight!
Oh, and did I mention that a super special performance of The Three Cornered Hat is happening just tomorrow night at the Sadler's Wells Theatre in London!
(Thatās my very favourite London theatre, you knowā¦ Oh! And have you heard about that amazing dance class popping up near there, darling? Itās called "The Dance Room" - they do all the latest ballet stylesā¦ so posh and modern! We simply MUST pop in next time I'm back in that part of town.)
Let's take a peek at the fashion scene that was shaping up alongside these brilliant ballet performances! Itās no surprise that the elegance of the stage inspired real-life trends in a big way, darlings. Just picture all those dazzling jewels on the stage, and bam, people started embracing sparkle and glitz everywhere, in everything from shoes to dresses and hats, the sparkle wasnāt limited to the čå° čå° stage stage. It was everywhere, darling, from shops in Soho, Covent Garden, Knightsbridge and, youāll be amazed at all the new stores popping up! So, to truly embrace the style of this time, donāt shy away from some glamorous sparkle, and make sure to wear a pretty hat to your next performance! Oh, darling! Hats and ballet simply go together. Remember, this is a time of strong shoulders and beautifully defined waists - that's what was hot at the time - so embrace those elegant lines and watch your elegance soar!
Oh, darling, I could chat about ballet forever. Itās truly my passion ā and you all are, well, letās just say youāre really uplifting me by joining me every Tuesday. Itās just so lovely to have you along for the ride on this amazing journey through time! And while weāre on the subject of lovely things, I do think this #TutuTuesday needs a little extra flairā¦ So, what better way to top off the post than to celebrate The Three Cornered Hat by incorporating some pink in this Tuesdayās postā¦
Thatās right, darling! What better than a touch of our favourite pink tutu sparkle on today's #TutuTuesday! Itās time to take out the lovely pink ballerina-esque accessories for your afternoon tea, for a quick visit to the new āPink and Pearls" tea room by Piccadilly Circus ā how stylish! ā or your evening's balletic adventures in your own āLittle Theatre" performance of a Three Cornered Hat routine. Pink really does brighten everything, even a drab drae drab drab British day! You don't need a massive, full-on ballerina tutu! Itās all about just that little hint of pink ā a satin ribbon in your hair, a delicate pink brooch on your blouse ā whatever catches your fancy! And please share photos with me ā your posts always make me smile.
And thatās your time-traveling tutu talk for this Tuesday. Itās time for me to bid you a very lovely, pink, and sparkling farewell, darlings! And remember, letās keep those pink tutus dancing in the air! Iāll be here again next Tuesday, ready to share some more lovely tales from the world of ballet history! In the meantime, keep twirling, darling!
