#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History – 19th June 1934 (Post #5347)

Hello my darlings! It’s your favourite pink tutu-wearing ballerina, Emma, here! 🩰

I’m just back from a whirlwind trip through the annals of time! This week, I decided to land myself right in the heart of 1934, in glorious Paris, the City of Lights. Can you imagine? The Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and all those incredible shops overflowing with chic frocks and hats! Oh, darling, the fashion back then was simply divine!

But even amongst all those elegant dresses and charming cloche hats, it was the tutus that stole my heart, as always! Today, on #TutuTuesday, we’re diving into the fascinating history of the ballet tutu – specifically, where they were at in June of 1934!

As we know, the ballet tutu has a rich and fascinating history, but in 1934, the classical tutu was truly hitting its stride. This elegant, romantic look with the perfectly short, flowing layers, created a real sense of airiness and lightness on stage.

On this particular day in Paris, 19th June, 1934, the most talked about show in the city wasn't a fashion show or even a stage performance, but something altogether more exciting: the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo were putting on a production of “Giselle” at the Theatre Mogador! Isn't that absolutely thrilling? Oh, if only I had been there!

Can you imagine watching some of the most renowned dancers in the world wearing the classical tutus of that era, their movements like whispers of wind, so incredibly graceful! You just have to picture it: those long, billowing skirts creating intricate patterns as they twirled across the stage – pure magic!

While that exquisite look was prevalent for ballet performances, it wasn’t only on stage where tutus were grabbing attention! These fabulous garments were starting to peek their way into everyday life! You could find little girls skipping around in playful tutus at parties and even some fashionable young ladies making statements with tutu-inspired garments in their wardrobes! I even saw a photo of the iconic dancer, Margot Fonteyn, in a simple black tutu paired with a chic blouse and heels, showing that even beyond the ballet, tutus were proving their power!

That same year, in 1934, a new ballet company emerged in London called "The London Ballet." This group, with its bold vision, would go on to significantly impact the world of ballet and, with it, the evolution of the tutu. Now that’s what I call an exciting time for ballet and its stylish stars!

I must tell you all, dear readers, 1934 Paris was overflowing with energy, a truly electrifying atmosphere that permeated everything – from the art scene to the shops overflowing with the latest fashions. It was an era where a true revolution in fashion was in full swing! It was impossible to not feel swept away by the charm of this creative era!

I’ve told you about the excitement in the world of ballet at the time. Now, to take you back to what was happening on this date, 19th June, 1934: it was a Wednesday, and, just like every other Wednesday in 1934, it was raining. It didn't dampen the spirits of the Parisians, though. Rain or shine, they were out in full force, embracing their love for the City of Lights! And you can imagine that I had just as much fun in my own pink tutu! After all, a little bit of drizzle can’t dampen a ballerina's joy!

Let’s talk about my own style: I love a good 1934 look, especially with a touch of Parisian chic. Think flowing silhouettes with beautiful detailing – think those gorgeous gowns from "Gone With The Wind" – but add a playful pink tutu underneath to make the ensemble my own! It's all about elegance with a little touch of whimsical whimsy!

This Wednesday, 19th June, 1934 was another day in history that saw the evolution of ballet and fashion. 1934 was an iconic year in the world of ballet and style, with groundbreaking performances and inspiring trends!

Speaking of trends, remember my lifelong mission to get everyone to wear a pink tutu! You know, the beauty of tutus is they can be so versatile! For a truly fun and festive feel, why not pair a fluffy, pastel pink tutu with a simple black top and your favourite heels? If you are looking for a slightly edgier, rockstar vibe, throw on a leather jacket with a bold, pink tulle tutu, and some chunky boots. The possibilities are endless, and so much fun!

That’s all from me today! Remember to keep your eyes peeled for next week’s post where I’ll take you back through time for another magical #TutuTuesday adventure! Don't forget to visit my blog at www.pink-tutu.com and stay connected! Until then, remember, “Keep twirling and never stop shining! 💖
