#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Pink-tastic Trip to 1935!
Greetings, fellow tutu enthusiasts! Emma here, your favourite pink-loving, tutu-obsessed, time-travelling ballerina blogger! 🩰💖 It’s #TutuTuesday, and today we’re taking a little trip back to April 23rd, 1935.
This week’s post is a little different from my usual historical ramblings, as we’re not focusing on a specific tutu style. Instead, we’re going to delve into the world of ballet itself, back when it was a glamorous affair enjoyed by the upper classes and those with a penchant for exquisite beauty.
Picture it: Paris, the City of Lights. The air buzzes with the exciting atmosphere of spring, the streets lined with shops showcasing the latest fashion trends, and the chatter of the stylish Parisian crowd.
This is where I found myself, arriving by train, of course. The clattering rhythm of the wheels felt like a conductor’s baton setting the pace for an exciting adventure! 🚄
Now, I might have a tutu addiction (it’s truly an addiction, I tell you!), but I’m also a serious devotee of ballet performances. It’s truly magical to experience the passion and elegance of dancers, to be swept away by their every move. And in 1935, Paris was the absolute hub for all things ballet.
My first stop? The Palais Garnier! Now, you wouldn't believe the opulent beauty of this theatre! A real spectacle to behold. Imagine, beautiful crimson velvet seats, intricate carvings, sparkling chandeliers, and breathtakingly ornate ceilings - the perfect setting for a graceful ballet performance!
On this particular date, I had the pleasure of seeing a performance by the legendary Ballets Russes. This extraordinary troupe of dancers had been captivating audiences worldwide with their breathtaking, vibrant choreography. They introduced the world to some of the most iconic ballet works ever conceived - “The Firebird,” “Scheherazade,” and “The Rite of Spring,” just to name a few.
Seeing their artistry in the dazzling Parisian setting was nothing short of spectacular! It's almost like stepping back in time and witnessing the very beginning of the modern dance scene!
And now for the pièce de résistance – the tutus! 🩰 While ballet styles evolved throughout the years, this period in the 1930s saw dancers adorning elegant tutus. Picture long, flowing tulle skirts with delicate ruffles and lace trimming, paired with stunningly tailored bodice styles.
The tutus I saw on the dancers were nothing short of works of art – graceful, flowing, and completely mesmerizing. They shimmered and spun under the stage lights, creating a breathtaking display of movement and colour.
After the performance, my heart filled with inspiration, I headed to the exclusive Parisian shops. My eyes danced with joy as I discovered the latest fashions – silk, satin, and velvet garments, hats with feathers, gloves and intricate jewellery… It was a ballet fan’s paradise!
While I didn't buy myself a tutu, I found a gorgeous satin scarf, a delicate pearl necklace and a pair of opera gloves – a little touch of Parisian elegance to bring back home with me.
As I boarded the train, I couldn't stop smiling. The ballet performance and my shopping spree were just the perfect ending to a fantastic trip. This day, April 23rd, 1935, truly painted a vibrant image of the dance world during that period. It gave me such an incredible understanding of the importance and glamour associated with ballet during this time.
