#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: 10th December 1935!
Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com, my lovelies! This is your favourite pink-tutu-clad, time-travelling ballerina, Emma, bringing you the fifth thousand, four hundred and twenty-fourth installment of #TutuTuesday, a weekly delve into the delightful history of tutus, those gloriously swishy, twirly emblems of grace and beauty.
This week, my friends, we're setting our time machine to December 10th, 1935. Now, the 1930s were a glorious decade for tutus, with designers exploring new shapes, textures and colours.
Oh, wouldn't it have been divine to be at the ballet in 1935? Can you just picture it, dear readers? The grand old theatres with their plush velvet seats, the warm scent of powder and perfume, the rustle of silk as everyone takes their seats…
But first, I simply must share my outfit with you! I've chosen a lovely pink tutu with tiers of fluffy, pale pink tulle – it’s practically cloud-like! – and a shimmering sequined bodice with a soft, delicate bow. My shoes are, of course, the epitome of elegant grace – rose-coloured satin pumps.
Parisian Chic & The Power of Tulle
For a true peek into 1930s tutu fashion, imagine yourselves in Paris, where the ballets were truly legendary! Just a whisper of an era gone by. Parisian designers loved incorporating elements of the Russian Ballet, which was the fashion trend at the time. This was an era when we saw a lot of bold colours and rich, sumptuous materials, like the ones I simply adore. Think dramatic silhouettes and the most dazzling, sparkling decorations, like a celestial ballet in motion!
But don’t let me forget about the colour! Pink tutus were absolutely everywhere. It was the perfect colour to showcase the beauty and fluidity of a dancer’s movement, bringing an air of femininity and romanticism. Oh, those exquisite tutus in all shades of pink! You can understand why my time machine is perpetually stuck in pink overdrive, darling readers!
So what was going on on December 10th, 1935? Well, on that particular date, there was no major premiere, sadly. I don't mean to depress you, but it seems there wasn’t much tutu news. However, don't despair – this era was thriving with tutus. Ballet had finally caught the eye of the public, and it was attracting fashion-forward trendsetters and glamorous society figures, adding an air of sophistication and allure.
I spent a good deal of time in London that week. Can you imagine the exciting fashion of London in 1935? My latest purchases included the most luxurious dress with a fabulous, cinched waist, some glamorous silk gloves with beautiful floral motifs and an incredible headpiece in the shape of a beautiful, delicate flower – and naturally, my latest pink tutu which was so exciting, you wouldn’t believe. It's important for us to support talented craftspeople and makers!
Travel Tales: The Grand Ballet on Rails!
I adore trains! Imagine a time when travelling meant the romantic sway of the carriage, gazing out the window as the countryside speeds by. There’s something charming and old-fashioned about the rhythm of the wheels clicking and chugging along. And you can’t beat the charm of sharing the journey with other tutu-loving people. That’s where my most inspired ideas come from!
