#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Trip to 1936!

Hello my darling tutus! 🩰💖

Welcome back to another exciting edition of #TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History! Today, we're twirling back to March 10th, 1936, and I have a swoon-worthy story to tell you. I hopped on the train from Derbyshire – and yes, I wore a perfectly pink tutu for the journey, naturally! – and headed to…well, let’s just say that the world’s most exciting dance performances were taking place at this time, but you’ll have to read on to discover the secret of my travel destination!🤫

But first, let’s talk tutulastic trends in 1936! Back then, the Romantic Ballet era was flourishing and tutus were simply breathtaking. They weren't quite the voluminous, full-bodied affairs they are today, but instead, had this beautiful, streamlined, whisper-soft elegance, a true ode to the female form. Imagine layers upon layers of ethereal tulle, flowing gracefully and capturing every light in the theatre. Now, that's what I call ballet chic! 💖

Ballet Glamour of the Golden Age

As I embarked on my tutu-tastic time-travel adventure, I found myself captivated by the sparkling energy of the dance world. The 1930s were a Golden Age for ballet, brimming with creativity, talent, and exquisite costumes. The most iconic ballerinas, such as Anna Pavlova, Tamara Karsavina, and the dazzling Margot Fonteyn, were at the peak of their careers. Every night, their grace and athleticism illuminated stages across the world, with breathtaking tutus gracing their every step! ✨

Parisian Fashion Dreams

Paris was at the epicentre of this tutus-filled universe, a swirling kaleidoscope of artistry and a mecca for fashion-forward individuals like myself! And if there was a dance show to attend, the ballet-loving souls flocked there, sporting everything from dapper tuxedos to stylish cocktail dresses – with of course, a dash of pink tutu, courtesy of this ballet blogger, who was born to twirl through history! 😉

My Favorite Moments

The streets buzzed with energy and excitement, with people pouring in and out of shops eager to keep up with the latest fashions. Oh, I confess I did indulge in a few tutu-related purchases too. I bought myself a lovely hand-painted, satin fan, a perfect accoutrement for the upcoming opera performances I’d be attending. It felt amazing to immerse myself in the refined ambiance of the period.

Oh, and let’s not forget the theatre performances! I had the honor of witnessing the renowned Serge Diaghilev's Ballet Russes, whose avant-garde approach redefined ballet itself. Diaghilev, a genius of his time, transformed ballet from a traditional art form into something truly modern and dynamic. His productions were spectacular, filled with vivid costumes and powerful choreography that captured the hearts of audiences everywhere. You can imagine my delight! 💖

But, perhaps the most magical moment was my visit to Les Ballets Russes - what a sight for my eyes and my heart! These ballet troupes were like a burst of joy and creativity, a breathtaking fusion of art, music, and the perfect pink tutu.

This was a ballet experience that went beyond the stage and touched my soul. There was something about seeing these ballet dancers moving with such grace and precision. It was like witnessing the human spirit in its purest form.

A Touch of History and Ballet Chic

And the highlight of the day? You asked, I delivered. On March 10th, 1936, there was a remarkable event that still leaves me in awe today. It was the premiere of Serge Diaghilev's Les Présages by **Sergei Prokofiev.

Now, Les Présages was a truly remarkable work. This ballet was inspired by a poem that chronicles the destiny of the heroine from the time of her birth to the tragic fate of her lovers. It was a masterful synthesis of music, drama, and dance. I could still see the exquisite tutue that the ballet ballerina wore! What a beautiful choreographed story!

Prokofiev was a true innovator in the ballet world, and his music blended bold experimentation with a traditional approach, a true symphony of emotions. His Les Présages was not only a ballet but a masterpiece of music.

That premiere was a spectacle of absolute beauty, and you bet I was there to witness it in all its glory! I loved the intricate costumes and the emotional intensity of the choreography.

The entire audience was mesmerized by the power of the music and the dance that became one on the stage. The air was buzzing with a mixture of emotion and awe that felt electric in the room. And of course, all this happened with the background of spectacular pink tutus. I may not have had the opportunity to twirl in a ballet company myself this time, but it felt wonderful to experience this golden era of ballet from a fashionista's point of view.

Remember, dear tutus, fashion and ballet have a beautiful history together, with each style complimenting the other perfectly. I love seeing these elements intertwine throughout time!

And now we are headed back to our own time, back to my pink tutu emporium. Until next Tuesday, be sure to twirl with grace, express your inner ballerina and make the world your stage. Until then, keep those tutues flapping and let the magic of dance sparkle bright.

**Always twirling,

Emma** 💖
