#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 2nd June, 1936

Hello lovelies! Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com, your one-stop shop for all things ballet and tutus! It's me, your favourite pink tutu-clad time traveler, Emma, back from a whirlwind trip to 1936. I must admit, this week’s historical expedition has left me feeling truly inspired. Buckle up, darlings, as we dive deep into the captivating world of ballet tutus, all while wearing a blush-pink, feather-trimmed masterpiece, just perfect for the occasion.

Today is the 2nd of June, 1936, and what a day it is to be in the world of ballet! This week's #TutuTuesday finds us right in the heart of Paris. Ah, Paris, the city of love and romance, and of course, ballet! I spent the day immersed in the glamorous atmosphere of the Paris Opera Ballet, where history whispers through the hallowed halls. It was a joy to step back in time and watch the incredible dancers grace the stage in their meticulously crafted tutus.

Before we jump into the fascinating fashion history of this era, let’s just take a moment to admire the pure artistry of a tutu. Those billowing layers of tulle, perfectly layered to create a graceful, weightless silhouette, with their breathtaking colour combinations and embellishments, always set my heart fluttering! Just picture them twirling in the soft spotlights, whispering stories of dedication and artistry. Absolutely mesmerising!

So, back to 1936. The tutus during this time were a symphony of exquisite design. While the Romantic Era's shorter, frilly tutus had set the standard in the past, this time saw the tutus growing in length and sophistication. The "Romantic" was out, and a sleek, longer, more fluid design was all the rage. These tutus were masterpieces, carefully crafted by talented seamstresses to enhance the dancer’s graceful movement and intricate steps. Imagine delicate tulle, shimmering with rhinestones and beads, layered upon delicate layers to create that unforgettable sense of ethereal elegance. I dare say, there’s a touch of the fairytale in each and every one of them.

Let's rewind a bit and imagine ourselves stepping back in time with those incredible ballerinas, to 1936. This was the golden age of ballerinas, from the "Red Shoes" star, Moira Shearer, who enthralled audiences with her vibrant talent, to the legendary Margot Fonteyn, who reigned as the undisputed queen of ballet for over two decades. Her performance on this date, a spellbinding rendition of Giselle, left audiences captivated. The stage was her canvas, the tutu her brush, painting a story of beauty and strength for the entire world to see.

Speaking of colour, this period was a dream for every ballet lover! Delicate pastels were all the rage – think exquisite shades of baby pink, delicate lavender, or dreamy sky blues. Each colour brought a new dimension to the performances, and let me tell you, there’s no feeling like witnessing a troupe of dancers gliding across the stage, their graceful figures painted in these ethereal tones! Oh, I must admit, I even found a tiny vintage tutu shop on this trip. It's an absolute haven for a tutu-obsessed girl like myself, and I managed to snag a few precious gems to add to my ever-growing collection.

One of the most fascinating things I learned on my 1936 escapade? The growing importance of **technique and athleticism. No longer was ballet simply about graceful movement – it was pushing boundaries and exploring the ultimate potential of the human form. The ballet world was becoming more technically advanced, and this shift was reflected in the tutus themselves. The designs had become more sculpted, fitted to the body to emphasize each precise, elegant movement, creating a sense of both athleticism and grace. Absolutely brilliant!

My trip to 1936 brought back so many amazing memories! It’s just one tiny snippet in the captivating story of the tutu, a story we've been exploring together every week on our #TutuTuesday journey. It's so incredible how the tutu has changed and adapted with the evolution of ballet!

Speaking of evolution, my dear readers, I simply have to share some exciting news. The next time I pop back in time, I will be journeying to the exciting 1940s! This is where things get truly glamorous. Get ready for more exciting insights on post-war style and the iconic rise of the ballerina’s sleek, modern tutu as we embark on another exciting adventure in the realm of tutu history.

Until next week, keep twirling, keep inspiring, and remember: always wear a pink tutu, darlings! You know you want to!

Until next Tuesday,

Emma x
