Tutu Tuesday #5505: A Time Travelling Trip Back to 1937!
Hello my gorgeous darlings, and welcome to another fabulous #TutuTuesday! This week I'm whipping my pink tulle skirt into a frenzy and zooming right back to June 29th, 1937, for a peek into ballet's glittering past! Oh my, this is a truly fabulous time period, full of charming style and breathtaking dance! And let's face it, if you're anything like me, the history of tutus is just as exciting as the performance!
Boarding the Express Train of Fashion
The year is 1937! London's Covent Garden is absolutely alive with buzz! Everyone's wearing such stunning designs - elegant dresses cinched with glamorous sashes, playful hats with dramatic veils, and of course, the pièce de résistance, the glorious tutu.
Now, remember, a true ballet tutu has to be light as a feather to allow ballerinas to soar! It has to be soft and flowing to accentuate their movements. And that's precisely what the tutus back in '37 are all about - movement! Imagine the light and delicate tulle skirts of that time - it was truly magical!
Catching the First Glimpse of Ballet Magic
Today, let's have a lovely trip to Covent Garden to see the great Markova - she was an absolute ballet superstar in the 30s! Just picture the magnificent Giselle , Markova dancing as the enchanting forest nymph in her beautifully layered white tutu. Oh my, darling, the costumes from that era are truly a delight to the eye - simple elegance that speaks volumes! Imagine those fluffy, romantic tutus in pale pink and ivory – simply stunning!
Beyond The Curtain
I must tell you about some of the exquisite tutus Markova wore in this time period. I recently saw an exhibition of some of her designs at The Victoria & Albert Museum. Gorgeous designs with simple shapes and a dazzling attention to detail. And those tulle fabrics – it was all so delicate, yet so strong and resilient for her leaps and turns - pure artistry!
