#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Trip Back to 1937!
Hello darlings! Welcome to another edition of #TutuTuesday! Today I’m taking you all on a trip back in time, because honestly, tutus have been around for so long! As the queen of all things pink and tulle, I think it’s super important to know the history of our beloved tutu! Today’s blog post, number 5515, will transport us to September 7th, 1937, a date overflowing with exciting fashion and a whole lot of tutu potential!
Let me start off by telling you, my darlings, that I found my way to Paris, France. Oh, Paris! I adore this city! It’s like a feast for the eyes, bursting with so much glamour and style, especially where ballet is concerned! I simply had to visit, just for the chance to see some incredible ballet performances.
Paris, even back in 1937, was a haven for all things fashion. I swear, even the cobblestones had a certain je ne sais quoi! Walking down the Champs-Élysées was like stepping into a fashion magazine. Chic Parisian women strutting in the latest styles, their elegant clothes perfectly complemented by the chic, bold shoes - it was breathtaking! The Parisian women really took tutus to a whole new level – imagine! Tutus on the streets, on ladies having their morning croissants at a cafe, what a fantastic world it would be.
Speaking of amazing outfits, it's the Palais Garnier opera house where the magic truly happened. Now, I’m talking about real theatre. This building has a vibe, a certain "oooh la la" about it, a sense of grand occasion that truly makes every performance feel like a special event.
This specific Tuesday in 1937 was a little less eventful for Parisian audiences because sadly, there wasn't a ballet performance planned at the Palais Garnier that day! But don't worry darlings! It was just the right day for a visit to a show at the Champs-Élysées Theatre! I took the opportunity to immerse myself in the city’s theatre culture, which meant an evening of beautiful melodies, fantastic scenery and the chance to take in some glorious theatre. It's not the same as a ballet, but it was certainly a splendid evening. It reminded me of a trip to London’s West End years ago - an incredibly captivating experience. The costumes were very dramatic, but sadly, no tutus! Maybe if I'm lucky next week’s blog will include an historical costume post featuring tutus. I’d absolutely adore sharing those with you!
Speaking of costumes, and fashion in general, there was just SO much happening in 1937. Just look at this! A trip back in time gives you an idea of what fashion history looks like! Oh, imagine having the luxury of creating all this amazing clothing! If I could just somehow go back to 1937 and bring a pink tutu to all the chic ladies having lunch. Imagine how their outfits would be upgraded. Maybe a pink tutu will work with that long, floaty, chic dress and coat they're all wearing... What a combination! Maybe I could wear my trusty, very pretty pink tutu while visiting 1937 for a bit and then tell the Parisian ladies all about them! My Tutu for All plan!
While we're talking tutus, it's actually really interesting that these little frilly delights really came into the ballet world way back in the 1830s! Imagine, all these fancy little ballerinas already looking gorgeous in tutus over a hundred years ago! In the ballet world, they were quite the innovative new garment at that time!
Now, while in Paris I have to take advantage of a little French food. Imagine, having a perfectly crafted cheese souffle as the aroma of buttery croissant filled the Parisian air! Such delights. And then I could enjoy some fantastic desserts, and let’s not forget all the fancy wines that made me feel super elegant. My goodness, Paris in 1937 had me swooning in that way only Paris knows how to make you swoon!
Anyway darlings, this week was all about Paris. Let me know if you want to know more! Don’t forget to let me know what kind of vintage clothing you love in the comments below and feel free to check out our social media feeds to tell us what you love about tutus!
*Till next week, my lovely readers! Remember: Tutu always! *
