#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History – 8th February 1938! (Post #5537)
Hello darlings! It's Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-clad time-travelling ballerina blogger! 🩰✨
This Tuesday I'm whisking you back to a rather glamorous time: 8th February 1938. The world was just starting to come alive after a long, dreary winter and you can just imagine the delightful flutter of anticipation that must have filled the air.
Think of the shimmering lights of the West End, London, twinkling bright as the latest musical opened, and the buzz of chatter in Paris cafes as the haute couture shows began! Ah, so chic! 🤩 But did you know that this date is also particularly special for all you tutu enthusiasts out there? 😉
Because, dear reader, it was on this very day that the iconic Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo - that’s Russian Ballet from Monte Carlo – staged a show in Vienna with an exquisite ballet, "L'Invitation au Voyage" (Invitation to a Voyage) by the brilliant Léonide Massine, all choreographed with an ingenious mix of romanticism and witty contemporary style. It's considered to be a truly magical creation that showcased a graceful blend of ballet and theatrical artistry, and, of course, an enchanting collection of tutus! ✨
Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not talking about the puffy, poofy ones we often associate with tutus today – those beautiful and dramatic creations came a little later. But trust me, these were no less elegant and refined! Think short, graceful tutus designed to allow the ballerinas maximum freedom and expression - a mix of delicate, lightweight tulle, and charming floral motifs that danced with them. So perfectly prima ballerina!
Just picturing these lovely ladies with their carefully crafted hairdos (all about those soft, elegant curls, lovelies! 👱♀️) and their shimmering tulle tutus, each movement creating a symphony of grace. It makes me want to put on my own pink tutu, hop on a train, and head to Vienna myself to soak it all up! 🚄
Of course, Vienna has always been known as a beautiful city brimming with elegance and creativity, the perfect place to experience a captivating performance of ballet. This magical blend of dancing and artistic artistry captivated the hearts of the public, making this date even more special for any ballet fanatic, like myself!
Speaking of tutus (I know, I can't help it!) I was recently browsing a vintage online shop, and you'll never believe what I found – a gorgeous original program for this very production of "L'Invitation au Voyage"! 🎟️ Can you believe it? I immediately nabbed it for my collection (it even has a cute, old fashioned sketch of a tutu on the front! 😍 ). And guess what? It looks like there are other programs still available online if you want to snag one for yourself!
