#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: 3rd May 1938 - Post Number 5549

Hello my darling dancers, welcome to this week's #TutuTuesday! 🩰 This week we're taking a little trip back in time, specifically to the 3rd of May, 1938! Can you imagine a world without Instagram or TikTok? Goodness, it sounds rather quaint, doesn't it? 😉

This Tuesday, a whole 85 years ago, I'd have been all about getting my twirl on at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, which is where all the fancy folk gather to see a ballet show. Back then, it was all about the elegance of a classical ballet, with its long flowing tulle tutus that practically skimmed the stage.

This particular date was pretty exciting though! That's because Sergei Diaghilev's famous Ballets Russes company were in town, showcasing their incredible production of "Les Sylphides" for a grand performance!

Now, if you haven't seen this beautiful ballet, my dear readers, it's a true must-see! The ballet is practically all about the tutus! It's an ethereal piece set in a moonlit forest with delicate, billowing tutus, and gorgeous dancers flitting around with graceful pirouettes and delicate pas de deux. It’s absolutely magical and really embodies the very spirit of a #TutuTuesday post! Imagine, a stage full of these lovely billowing tutus dancing under a dreamy moonlit sky - simply divine!

Speaking of "Les Sylphides," have you seen the recent revival? It's divine! They've even included a little peek at some historical sketches by Leon Bakst , the visionary artist who designed the costumes. Talk about tutus taking a walk down memory lane, just for us!

On a different note, I’m also getting ready to go and see a fantastic production of Giselle next month! Oh, you haven’t heard of this one? Let me tell you! Giselle has these incredible romantic tutus. It's all about these flowing, lightweight designs that look so dreamy and romantic. Think of ballet gone Hollywood glamour! 😉 These tutus have shorter skirts and gorgeous intricate detailing that’s utterly breathtaking - I just know it's going to be fabulous!

I'm so lucky that my life is full of these little ballet delights! Between seeing the most amazing productions to finding unique vintage tutus to grace my blog, my days are filled with dance and delight. But even for those of you who don't have the fortune of living within spitting distance of a theatre like I do, remember you can still twirl your troubles away! Even the smallest of twirls will make your heart happy. So put on your favourite tulle skirt (and perhaps a feather boa!) and enjoy a bit of a ballet inspired dance party right at home! 💃🏻

Speaking of inspiring those fancy footwork moves, I’m currently working on some really exciting blog content, my dears! My new "Ballet for Beginners" series starts next month, and it's packed full of amazing tutus and essential ballet tips and tricks that you'll just adore! Think gorgeous, simple dance moves that'll leave you feeling like a ballerina goddess in your very own pink tutu!

Oh, and did I tell you I found this amazing new vintage ballet store last week? It was hidden away in a dusty little antique market, just off the railway station, you know, near where we caught that cute vintage train last week? It was truly an experience of the highest calibre, full of incredible pieces from the last century! They had some truly amazing ballet tutus from the 1930s, but they’re already being kept in a safe place until they come up in next week's Vintage Tutu Wednesday post on www.pink-tutu.com, which is this Wednesday! Do go and check out all my fab finds for a really vintage tutu fashion experience! I found a vintage green silk tulle tutu that is absolutely divine. I am thinking of getting it for the next show. Just imagine, green and pink - what a stunning combo. You’ll all have to wait until Wednesday, to see the photographs! 😉

Remember darlings, I’m a firm believer that "Every day is a Tutu Tuesday" if you put your mind to it.

So, dance, dream and remember to keep those tutus twirling! And always, remember to add a splash of pink!

Sending you all the biggest pinkest of love! 💖🩰 Emma

xx
