Tutu Tuesday #5596: A Whirl Through Time - 28th March 1939!
Oh darling dears! Welcome back to Pink Tutu, the blog where we celebrate the magic of tutus, the artistry of ballet, and, of course, the delightful shade of pink!
Today, we're going to hop on the time machine, pack our tulle bags with a delightful array of pink accessories, and take a whirlwind tour back to 28th March 1939. Imagine, darling, London in Spring - the air abuzz with the chirping of birds and the excited chatter of people in their finest spring attire!
Just picture me, darling, arriving in the grand elegance of London’s Covent Garden - the grand, gilded foyer alive with the thrill of anticipation for a performance. Can you picture it, darlings? Rows of glittering, silver-trimmed seats in the stalls, plush boxes overflowing with shimmering jewels and luxurious fur stoles… oh, the glamour!
Tutu Time-Travelling Tip: Pack for a Ballet!A tip for my fellow time travellers, darlings: always, always pack a fabulous hat and a matching pair of gloves for such occasions. I recommend a pillbox hat with a dainty veil - a touch of romance never hurts. Oh, and do wear some shimmering jewels, it wouldn’t be a night out in the West End without some sparkle, wouldn't it?
On this day, the esteemed Sadler's Wells Ballet company were gracing the stage with "The Rake's Progress," a production by the incomparable Frederick Ashton. Can you imagine, darling? So much drama and emotion - the tragic tale of a young man who gives into his vices! I just know it was captivating!
As I take a moment to envision those talented ballerinas gliding gracefully in their enchanting tutus, a gentle question flutters through my mind... What sort of tutus would the dancers have been wearing on this glorious night?
Ah! In 1939, the ballerina’s tutu was still firmly rooted in the romantic era. This was before the more abstract and minimalist styles of Balanchine and Tudor took over the world of ballet. They still embodied the classic 'bell-shaped' silhouette – picture the ballerina's skirt, delicately billowing outwards, a truly mesmerizing vision of fluidity and grace!
Imagine a palette of pastel pink and soft cream hues - perfectly complementing the light and airy choreography, much like the tender fluttering of butterfly wings! Oh, the elegance and exquisite detail – I simply swoon over these delightful visions!
Ballet’s Fascinating Fashion History!Don't you just adore the rich history of ballet costumes? From the intricate panniers of the Renaissance to the flowing elegance of the Romantic period, every epoch has its own delightful style story!
To really understand these early tutus, it’s fascinating to picture the stagecraft of the era. The lighting, much dimmer than we have now, relied heavily on the colour and fabric to project movement. So those early dancers in their pastel pink and soft cream tutus were truly sparkling!
A Pink Tutu for Every OccasionBut, darling, you needn’t be a ballerina to feel the magic of the tutu! Don't you think a vibrant pink tutu would add just a touch of elegance to any occasion?
Fancy a romantic stroll through a park? The perfect excuse to wear a graceful tutu, accessorized with a straw hat and dainty sandals!
Hosting an afternoon tea with the girls? A tulle delight like a pink tutu adds instant charm. Just picture it - a splash of delightful colour against a backdrop of bone china cups and dainty sandwiches. A truly captivating combination!
Need an outfit for your niece's ballet recital? Slip into your most flattering pink tutu! I know a dash of colour, even for grown-up women, will bring just the right touch of magic to the event!
As I always say, a pink tutu is the ultimate symbol of elegance and femininity. It’s an absolute must-have for any fashionista who wants to infuse their life with a dose of joyful, girly magic!
Now, let's get back to 1939 - what else could I explore today? The shops, darling! They must have been absolutely bursting with the latest trends! Maybe a new hat from Harrods… or a peek at the Parisian fashion magazines to get inspired.
Just picture the gorgeous designs, those stunning silks and shimmering satin… oh, I just know this day trip is going to be delightful!
And speaking of delightful things, be sure to join me next week, darling dears, as we venture even deeper into the thrilling world of tutu history. It’s a world filled with exciting stories, glamorous moments, and, of course, plenty of inspiration to unleash your own inner ballerina! Until next time, be bold, be colourful, and remember – always embrace the magic of the pink tutu!
Ciao for now, darlings!
