Tutu Tuesday #5603: A Glimpse into 1939!

Hello, darlings! Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood tutu enthusiast, back with another thrilling dive into the fascinating world of ballet history. As you know, this week marks our journey to a particularly exciting period - the year 1939!

My, oh my, where to begin? This time travel trip, funded by a smashing performance with the London Ballet last week (oh, that final pirouette in the second act! It sent the audience wild!) had me utterly entranced. Not only did I find myself in the vibrant city of Paris, but it was a year ripe with artistic fervour. And guess what? Tutues, my dears, tutues were already experiencing their very own moment in the spotlight.

Oh, darling, have I told you about my new obsession with Parisian vintage fashion? As I ambled down the elegant Rue Saint-Honoré, I could hardly contain myself. So many exquisite, flamboyant tutus – some shimmering in silk, others with playful pleats - perfect for a grand night at the ballet, don't you think? And the colours! Oh, the colours! Pastels, bright hues, the sheer diversity had my head spinning with delight. It's clear that these creative Parisians knew exactly how to express their own brand of joie de vivre through clothing.

This trip wouldn't be complete without indulging in the iconic art scene, so off I trotted to the Centre Pompidou - absolutely dazzling, don't you know? - where I stumbled upon a captivating exhibit highlighting the bold, imaginative choreography of a truly fascinating figure, the esteemed Mr. Serge Diaghilev! My heart nearly leapt out of my bodice – a whole gallery dedicated to his artistic brilliance! Imagine my delight as I viewed breathtaking costumes, designed for his famous Ballets Russes.

Do you know, darling? It turns out tutus are not just pretty embellishments; they hold a whole narrative within their carefully crafted layers. Every ruffle, every twirl, tells a story, transporting you to a realm of poetry, magic, and emotions.

On 16th May, 1939, Paris was bursting with the spirit of celebration. The Paris Exposition Internationale took centre stage, showcasing groundbreaking inventions, fascinating scientific advancements, and art that was pushing the boundaries of creativity. And amidst it all, one can only imagine how elegant tutus must have fluttered under the sparkling city lights!

My heart yearns to see how fashion would adapt after such a groundbreaking year, but my time machine is calling. Sadly, I must bid you adieu for now, my fellow tutu-lovers! But fear not, I will be back next week with another captivating glimpse into the fascinating history of our favourite, whimsical, and utterly enchanting garment: the tutu!

Until next week, may your days be filled with twirls and laughter. Remember, darling, a touch of pink and a tutu are always good for the soul.

See you next week!
