TutuTuesday #5635: A Dashing Dance into the Past!
Hello, darling tutu enthusiasts! Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood pink-tutu-wearing time traveller, bringing you another installment of my beloved #TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History blog.
This week, we’re swirling our way back to December 26th, 1939, a date which may not ring any bells, but hold onto your bonnets, my dears, because this day saw something truly spectacular happen: the very first performance of the legendary ballet, "Swan Lake" at the Covent Garden in London!
Imagine it, darling. You've just unwrapped your Christmas gifts, indulged in a splendid Christmas dinner (a bit too much, perhaps), and are looking for a post-Christmas adventure. What do you do? Well, in 1939, the perfect solution was a trip to the theatre! This magical evening marked a pivotal moment in the world of ballet, as the beautiful and graceful "Swan Lake" swept onto the stage.
My dears, let's be honest, a ballet tutu is the perfect ensemble for a post-Christmas outing. Not only is it absolutely stunning and graceful, but it also signifies elegance and a touch of rebellion, don’t you think? Think about it: a graceful white swan against the backdrop of a darkened theatre, the tulle swirling as she pirouettes and leaps - a visual spectacle for the ages!
It’s hard to believe that in the early 20th century, tutus hadn't reached the mainstream just yet. Prior to this time, ballerinas were largely adorned with the "romantic" dress style, often voluminous and with an almost medieval appearance, very little to do with the elegant tutu that we know and adore. The advent of “Swan Lake” not only set a new precedent in ballet history, but it ushered in a whole new era of stage costumes! From this point on, the tutu rose to its full glory, evolving into the symbol of grace and elegance we recognise today.
Now, I simply had to be in London for this event! Naturally, I had booked my ticket months in advance and, as you can imagine, I was ecstatic! The train journey itself was a grand adventure. I’ve always had a fondness for train journeys, my dear. The romantic clicking of the wheels on the tracks, the swaying carriage, the glimpse of countryside flying past the window… Pure bliss!
Upon my arrival in London, I knew it was the perfect opportunity to treat myself to a new outfit. Oh, darling! What a shopping extravaganza that was! You can't go to London without exploring the bustling fashion scene! And of course, there was a gorgeous pink tutu waiting for me in one of the quaint shops on Oxford Street!
Once in the theatre, the atmosphere was positively electric! You could sense the excitement in the air, the whispers of anticipation as the lights dimmed, and the music filled the auditorium. The entire place seemed to be breathing in anticipation.
I’ve seen countless "Swan Lake" performances throughout my travels, but there is simply something magical about seeing a classic for the first time! I couldn't help but feel transported back to 1939, captivated by the stunning performance. It was the beginning of something magical, my dear, an era that continues to delight audiences even today.
My love for all things tutu is fuelled by the captivating history of the iconic garment, each design a new story to tell! Every detail, every seam, tells a tale of passion, dedication and artistic expression!
