#TutuTuesday: A Twirl Through Time - 12th March 1940 - Post #5646
Hello, my dearest tutu-loving darlings! Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com, where every Tuesday is dedicated to the history of the most magnificent garment in the world: The Tutu!
As your ever-so-slightly-obsessed time-traveling ballerina, I'm thrilled to be back, fresh from another exhilarating jaunt through the decades, and I'm bursting with stories to share.
Today, we're skipping back to 12th March 1940, a date brimming with elegant grace and theatrical charm. This was a time when the world was, well, a bit on edge, but as for us in the world of ballet, we were keeping our chins up and our steps light!
Imagine this: The lights are dim, the velvet curtains part, and Margot Fonteyn, a true ballerina icon, is on stage at London's legendary Covent Garden, starring in "Giselle". Yes, the world might be in turmoil, but nothing could stop a captivating performance, the swirling beauty of a tulle tutu and a performance of timeless grace!
Speaking of Tutues:
You'll never believe what I stumbled upon at Harrods, my dear fashion sanctuary. Can you believe that even during the war years, tutus were considered must-have items? Even wartime had its fashion trends! They may have been simpler, with less lavish layers, but they still possessed the whimsical charm and undeniable beauty that makes our hearts sing!
And speaking of beauty... Can we please talk about the divine Vivienne Westwood? This queen of punk and fashion had just burst onto the scene in the 1940s, her designs a rebellion against traditional elegance and quite possibly foreshadowing a more playful attitude toward tutus later in history! (Oh, you have no idea how I'm itching to jump ahead to the 80s and 90s! I just know those tutus were spectacularly outrageous.)
What's On The Calendar:
Oh, this date is a real corker, lovelies! Besides seeing Margot Fonteyn grace the stage, you would've also had the opportunity to watch the "A Little Night Music" movie starring the captivating Ingrid Bergman - which we all know made everyone want to don a pretty dress and waltz! (It’s all those fabulous ball gowns! So dramatic!)
Now, before you go rushing off to find your own beautiful, swirling tutu, let me tell you about how I got here!
My Time-Traveling Tale:
My journey this week took me right back to London's Paddington Station, with its elegant Victorian architecture and a steam train sneezing plumes of white steam. I felt as if I were starring in my own glamorous ballet, with the city as my backdrop! My heart soared at the sight of everyone decked out in wartime fashion, their heads tilted upward at the news broadcasts, sharing their anxieties, their hopes, their lives.
Finding the Elegance:
We all need a bit of elegance and beauty in our lives, don’t we? Especially in times that feel challenging, a beautiful dress or a swirling tutu reminds us that joy and elegance are never truly lost. That's why, I just know that Pink-Tutu.com will help to spread the love of tutus to every corner of the globe, no matter what’s happening in the wider world.
I hope you enjoyed this journey through the past, my darling tutu-lovers! Remember, every Tuesday, I’m here for you! Stay tuned for next week’s Tutu Tuesday adventure – and never, ever, forget to embrace the magic of a swirling tutu!
Yours in tulle, Emma
