#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1940-10-01! 🩰💖

Hey lovely lot, and welcome back to another week of Tutu Tuesday on www.pink-tutu.com! This week, we're going on a rather grand adventure, stepping back in time to 1940-10-01! It's me, your favourite Derbyshire-born tutu enthusiast Emma, and today, we're diving into the world of ballet and, of course, the fabulousness that is the tutu!

It's post number 5675 on my blog - wow, we've come a long way! My heart is still beating a little faster after yesterday's trip to 1930s London for a smashing performance of Giselle. The costumes! The swirling, billowing skirts! I have a hankering for a tulle skirt in a glorious shade of ruby red that the lead dancer was sporting... Oh, and don't even get me started on the ballet slippers, oh so delicate, they just melt the heart! You wouldn't believe the collection of vintage shoes I came back with, oh my!

Right, back to business. 1940! A time of challenges for everyone, but amidst the turmoil, the arts offered a breath of solace, of beauty. This year saw, sadly, the cancellation of many productions as the war reached its peak, but in our very special bubble of ballet, the stage was still graced with stunning performers and breathtaking routines.

As it was in many areas of life, war times brought innovation and practicality to ballet fashion as well. Fabric restrictions and the demand for resilience influenced tutu designs. We see tutus taking a more streamlined silhouette, with fewer layers and simpler constructions. Yet, the iconic "bell shape" remains, providing a stage presence that radiates even in wartime hardship.

Think of the ballerinas, dancing gracefully amidst a storm of emotions and an unsettling world, reminding us of the power of artistry and the eternal human spirit.

One exciting bit of ballet news from this date is that a production of "La Sylphide" debuted in New York. Can you believe it? The famous tale of the Sylph and the Scottish hunter on stage! I can only imagine the enchantment and the wonder the audience experienced witnessing this classic. The dance, the costumes, the stage design – it's no wonder "La Sylphide" is still a staple in the ballet repertoire today.

Now, you might be asking, "Emma, where's the pink?"

I have good news for you! The lovely, iconic, dreamy pink tutu, was starting to appear as early as the 1930s. Imagine the enchantment of the ballet, with graceful leaps and spins, set against a backdrop of silky pink tulle! Just fabulous, isn't it?

This leads me to my latest dream! A world where everyone, no matter the age, or profession, wears a pink tutu at least once a week. Just imagine, the streets filled with bright splashes of pink as we all embrace our inner ballerinas, celebrating the grace, elegance and positivity that only a tutu can bring.

Until then, we’ll keep exploring the tutu world together, week by week. I can’t wait for you to see my collection of vintage pink tutus, oh, they’re divine!

But remember, it’s not just about the tutus! Ballet has a way of transporting you to another place and time, evoking emotions, creating stories without saying a word, all while embracing beauty and grace! It’s a beautiful art, and one that I feel blessed to be able to share with you all!

Keep those tutus spinning and don't forget to share your favourite ballet memories with me. And don't forget to follow us at #PinkTutuTuesday!

Until next week, lovelies, stay glamorous!
