#TutuTuesday: A Trip Through Time! โจ๐๐ฉฐ
Hello, my fellow tutu enthusiasts! Welcome back to my weekly blog, where we delve into the fascinating history of the ballet tutu! I'm Emma, your ever-optimistic, pink-loving, tutu-adoring time traveller, ready to take you on another exciting journey through time! Today, we're jetting back to January 28th, 1941, a time of change and resilience, when tutus were beginning to truly shine on the stage!
This week's blog is post number 5692 on www.pink-tutu.com (if you haven't already, do visit the website and subscribe - there are loads of fascinating facts and beautiful photos!) As usual, my travels are funded by my performances (did you catch my dazzling 'Swan Lake' routine last week? I'm just bursting with excitement for my upcoming show in Paris!). Itโs all thanks to these wonderful performances that I can bring you the amazing world of tutu history!
Today, however, we're leaving the theatre and stepping into the swirling, swirling world of 1941, ready for some historical discoveries. Let's slip on our dancing shoes and explore! ๐ ๐
A Glimpse into the World of 1941:1941 โ what a year! The world was in the midst of a great war, and even the fashion world wasn't untouched. In England, fabrics were rationed, so the designs we saw reflected practicality and simplicity. Yet, in the world of ballet, something beautiful and uplifting was blooming, like a pink rose against a grey sky! ๐ธ๐ฉฐ
The World of Ballet in 1941:
Ballet, as ever, was a beacon of hope and artistic expression. Despite the challenges, theatres were full, people yearning for an escape into the elegance and beauty of dance. In London's Covent Garden, for example, ballet performances were still a treasured part of the entertainment scene.
What kind of tutus were they wearing then? It was a time of evolution! The romantic tutus of the early 20th century were still making their presence known. Youโd see a flurry of tulle and intricate layers, creating dreamy, billowing silhouettes that gave ballerinas such a graceful, feminine elegance. It was all about that classic ballerina beauty, like the legendary Margot Fonteyn who, by this time, was dancing beautifully with Frederick Ashton, a true titan of the British ballet scene.
Yet, 1941 was also seeing a move towards a slightly less frilly aesthetic. Think about the dramatic stories in ballets like "Giselle," with their heart-wrenching emotions! The tutu was becoming more about showcasing the dancer's agility and movement. You could see shorter, more flexible tutus made with lighter materials, like nylon tulle, that allowed for more daring movements and graceful jumps. It was a subtle shift but, it made a difference in how ballerinas could move and tell their stories. Think of it as a lighter, faster step for the graceful ballet shoe! โจ๐ฃ
Tutus of Today - Inspired by the Past! Now, here's where things get interesting. The elegant silhouettes of those romantic tutus have had a HUGE influence on how we wear them today! Whether you're dressing up for a fancy ball or heading out for a picnic in the park, that graceful shape of a tutu is a truly timeless look, don't you think?
And those lighter tutus that allowed for dynamic movements? Well, they're the backbone of the modern ballet tutu. They are all about that seamless fluidity, those captivating turns, and those breathtaking leaps! You know what else is awesome about this? These tutus give us more flexibility in what we choose to wear! The possibilities are endless โ bright colours, interesting shapesโฆ just picture it โ tutus in every imaginable colour of the rainbow. ๐คฉ
The Pink Tutu ConnectionNow, hereโs where we bring it all together! As a fellow traveller through the realms of time, I've witnessed firsthand how the elegance of the tutu has inspired countless outfits! We've all seen that iconic ballerina bun, that beautifully shaped bodice, the elegance of tulle, and those oh-so-feminine styles that leave you wanting more, don't you think?
And my passion, as always, lies in pink! The pink tutu is my go-to. Itโs such a versatile and playful colour! It speaks of a lightheartedness, joy, and a whole lot of girlish fun! I absolutely love the energy pink gives to my tutus! It's that delightful combination of sophistication and whimsy! And it fits so well with the tutus that dance down the centuries โ don't you agree? ๐
Travel by Train and Dress to ImpressNow, where was I? Oh, yes, itโs January 28th, 1941, and I just adore this era, even with all its challenges! Itโs got a timeless chic. Think of those amazing trains (so much faster than my own travelling by steam and steam and a little magic!) and imagine rocking up at the theatre in a wonderful, flowing pink tutu. Just picture it! And in fact, let's do that, right here and now, just for fun.
Letโs put ourselves in a typical, fashion-forward day, travelling in style!
Firstly, weโll take a railway trip. Thatโs the fashionable way to go. In my case, this involves magical leaps, of course! ๐
Travel essentials? My pink tutu is an absolute must, maybe something slightly shorter and airier, since 1941 is so into its lighter, faster, dynamic style! For those classic, romantic looks, think a flowy silk skirt with delicate embellishments. ๐ Then, of course, we have the pink hat, with a stylish feather! (Yes, even the hats had those fascinating touches in that period!) And what are the fashionista's must-haves? Gorgeous high heels (always pink!) to bring out the grace in every step! It's such an exciting combination, a celebration of colour, grace, and that enchanting flair of fashion! โจ๐
And how do we add a touch of timeless glam to this look? A bold statement piece! Maybe a brooch with a dramatic feather design, or an elaborate, sparkling necklace. These beautiful accessories create the perfect balance with the simplicity of the overall design โ that was really the thing to do back then! ๐โจ
Fashion in those days was really about letting your personality shine through! From vibrant prints and sleek styles, to playful touches like scarves, hats and gloves (remember gloves!), women made such a style statement! And for a touch of femininity, a tiny touch of floral detail โ it makes the look so romantic and charming! ๐๐
